So truck travelling to Rustenburg, found to be carrying stolen motorcycle and bicycles. Driver arrested, then the next cops arrested for corruption. What about the goods owner?

Johannesburg - Four police officers have been arrested for corruption after allegedly demanding money from a truck owner whose driver was found in possession of a stolen vehicle, Gauteng police said on Friday.

The officers, all constables, were arrested at the Hekpoort police station around 19:00 on Thursday when they reported for duty, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

They stopped the truck, which was travelling towards Rustenburg, during an operation early that morning, searched it and allegedly found bicycles and a motorbike.

The motorbike had been reported stolen in Parkview, north of Johannesburg, Dlamini said. The bicycles were also thought to be stolen.

"Police officers took the truck to the police station and summoned the owner of the truck to the station.

"On arrival at the station, it is alleged that the officers demanded money. The owner of the truck reported them and they were later arrested when they resumed their duties," he said.

They would appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Right by Breedts. I hope this is the crack in this bike theft syndicate that leads to a big bust.

It is wise for then not to disclose more than this. If the value of the bicycles are made public it will inform crims on the value which might spike jackings.

erm.. what about the owner of the truck transporting stolen goods? Two crimes in one here.

Shoddy reporting as usual, but it seems the truck was stolen, and the owner was contacted, the pice of shite pigs then tried to shake down the owner of the truck for " transporting stolen goods"

This however probably goes a lot deeper. The goods on their way to rustenburg and probably the border thereafter, at the border bribes needs to be paid to get the merch over the border....but do you think this will be investigated?

Well atleast they found the truck with the stolen goods. I remember a while back everybody was saying "cant they catch these guys" ect... its a step in the right direction. However small, at least its in the news and its cycling related which could make people think twice about stealing a bike...

I think this is just the tip of the iceberg considering the amount of bikes and bicycles being stolen daily as we are easy targets on expensive toys if you may call it that. Not difficult to break it up into parts to sell and then it's just as easily "exported" to our neighbours, paying some bribes IF cought, and the goods perhaps even shipped overseas. It seems to be a lucrative business with the state of our criminal justice system, police corruption and border crossings. South Africa is now the land of milk and honey for criminals.

Probably Lobatse, or even martins drift.

But I am just speculating, I have no proof. Its just my opinion.

Ill founded opinion

Try bribing the Botswana officials and you can look forward to a pleasant stay in the local prison which is not a very nice place

Secondly the population is very small so a high end bike will stick out like a sore thumb

The cycling community in Bots is a close knit community and that kind of activity will be spotted swiftly

The Owner was summoned to the Police Station. He was obviously not the driver and the cops tried to extract a bribe to get his truck back or something, and chose the wrong person.
