Why ride on the highway...?

Why do there always have to be a few guys who cause the general road users to dislike cyclists even more?

Today I saw a small group riding on the R59 highway between Klipriver and Henley on Klip (assuming they were riding homewards after the Value Logistics Fast One).

They looked to be wearing some team kit, and really should know better. Simply put, blue signs = no cyclists!

Saw 2 really safety conscious idiots riding on the Freeway part of the M5 this morning. I know they were safety concious because they were wearing bright red and yellow "cyclists stay alive at 1.5" shirts. The fact that they had no lights on, in the fog, on a freeway, tells me that they were idiots!

That's a regular occurrence along there, along with riding two or three deep on the stretch from Sunrise Circle in Muizenberg.

Ja, the M5 is becoming a regular cycle track by the looks of it. I watched some oke negotiating the M5/N2 interchange and nearly had to go home to change my underwear. It's all the CTCT (nee Argus) once-a-year warriors who'll ride on the right-hand side all through the race because they've been "training".

Sadly we have them in Durban as well... recently there are a few newbie groups who ride on the M4 north between Durban and Umhlanga... they block the slow lane... very very annoying!!!

RIP Adre. Condolenses to the family

NO FAMILY should be subjected to what I witnessed on Tues!!!

It has affected me badly and will affect my future cycling.

Only us cyclists can change this ,SAPS and Metro police don't have the manpower to police cyclists.

Be Safe Out There!!!

Bernard - please go and visit/speak to a trauma counsellor about this - If you need a number I can find one for you - just drop me a PM, altenately your family doctor or priest should be able to point you in the right direction, and sometimes your corporate HR function may have a program they subscribe to for staff members.

They will help you to learn to deal with it - it's a process, not an instant fix.

Let me know.

I see a lot of people riding on the M5 lately… not a care in the world…

......cutting across the 100 km/h freeway traffic at every onramp and every offramp while going at 25 km/h themselves.

Same thing on the M3 freeway between Wineberg hill and Westlake.

.....it is simply a disaster waiting to happen!

Well, if you need to get from the brewery to Klipriver road you have two options. Either you ride up Vereeniging road (or known as Steps to the cyclists) towards Thokosa/Katlehong, and risk getting bike jacked if there are two or less of you, or take the "R59 Shortcut", which is a 2.3km stretch (of which 1.8km is on the actual Regional Road) to the bottom of Rand Water road, which you then jump onto after a 10m piece of singletrack and head safely back to Klipriver road along there.

Rather just live and let live/die and go on about your own life and business. If you don't like riding along that piece of road, then don't ride along it.

If I must choose between risking it on 1.8km of very wide shouldered tar every now and again, and getting violently robbed, I think I'll go with the R59 option.

I ride the R59 regularly from Klipriver to Vanderbijlpark but I am always alone and its very safe and riding far left on the inside the yellow the cars dont even know you are there. But I must admit that doing the same in a big group and then taking up the whole yellow lane is stupid!

Have seen them also(Europcar kit)...but the guy was motorpacing behind a team van when I spotted, with the amount of trucks and traffic on that highway its a hellava gamble. I just dont see the logic.

In Durban, our very kind, cycling-friendly mayor built us a very safe cycle lane over the river at Blue Lagoon and yet you still get morons who insist on riding on the road with absolutely no shoulder and cars screaming past at 100kmh.  WHY?????

Whether it's safe or not is besides the point. It's against the law to cycle on a freeway. point. Also saw these idiots on the R59 on Saturday. But yes, SA is a lawless country.

As someone who drives this road regularly I believe that you are fooling yourself if you think you are safe riding on this road. This road is extremely busy and trucks often move into the yellow lane to allow other trucks to pass and it is just a matter of time before we see an obituary of a cyclist taken out riding on this road.

I have often hooted to show my displeasure at the Europacar guys hoping that when they see my bike on the bike rack that they get that it's not a disgruntled motorist but one of their own who's not happy with their behavior. They get a part the message, but I get the finger, I just feel sorry for their families that they don't value their own lives.
