Cyclocross Tyres (where to buy)

Good thread!!

I've also bought a Cx bike end last year, and did many miles in the Karoo area in Dec.

Bike came with Maxxis Mimo Cx 35 mm.  No issues to run tubeless, but they ARE  NOT made for the rougher rocky stuff, especially on fast downhills.  They are soft and got a cut on mild rocky terrain (rear wheel) on a flat section - tyre pressure was around 3.5 bar.  Can't go lower since you will damage the rims on the downhills.

Works absolutely fine on fine gravel roads.

In my experience you need to run 40mm tyres which are a bit heavier to run a bit of a lower pressure without risk in damaging the rim, and will resists cuts better.

I think options for those are very limited in RSA at this point in time.

Another point to consider is that one should be able to run a 29er MTB tyre but in a 1.8 width - will fit my frame.  But those tyres are also not plentiful.

They will be perfect for all conditions.

Anyone know a shop that currently stocks CX tyres in JHB. I've phoned around and can't seem to track any down.

Sprocket and Jack will have Knards in stock usually.. Give them a call or pop in at 45 Chester road.

And in Cape Town? Where can one buy some CX tyres? Do all run these tubeless or some of you run it with tubes?

Consider the Spez range from your local concept store. Pretty well priced and all tubeless ready.

More a rim question than tyre, as I already have SPECIALIZED CX tyres.

Will normal 29er crest rims work for a cyclocross build actually a monstercross as I'm using a MTB frame or should I rather get cx specific rims? What are the pro's vs cons? Thanks in advance.

MTB rims might not be able to take the pressure of the Cx tyre when you travel on tar.  For me around 5 Bar.

Ditto of you want to use normal road tyres (say 28c) and increase pressure even further to 6 or 7 Bar.

Max pressure rating for rims are a bit scarce, but perhaps I am not looking in the right place.

As per your query in the CX thread...

A similar query was made on a cycling forum sometime ago and this was Stans repsonse:

'The Crest and the Iron Cross both do not work that well with road tires and tubes. They will not work at all with road tubeless tires. On the Crest the smallest I would run would be a 28 but the pressure might be limited by the rim to 80psi.

I would recommend the Alpha 340 as it works with road tires and cross tires.'

Note the query was geared to actual road tyres (higher pressures) not CX tyres which are usually 32 - 45C...

Off the ZTR website: The disc specific 340 rims were discontinued - so grab a pair when you can.

So, are there any options for those who would not be able to convert to CX, but do want the best tyres out there that can handle decent gravel roads and next to road cycling? Where does one go?
