Hit by Arrogant Parent at PWC Pump Track

I was debating whether or not to post this seeing as this is definitely a Friday thread, but I've heard stories time and again of parents at PWC confronting those on the pump track. Thinking about it last night, I thought  we need to work with PWC to try sort this out.

So here it goes:

Lead up

Dave, my SO(Harmony) and I decided to try the new routes at PWC on Saturday (7/2 @~9am). It was the usual birthday party rush for a Saturday so we went straight to the trails and did the new rust preventer, green mile and ventured to zombie bird house. To our dismay only ewok was open on the other side of the High Way.

We decided to head back after ewok and hit the pump track. Trying to teach Harms how to get her pomp pump on for the next PWC event (there were only 2 ladies, so she is keen to try since ladies are allowed to pedal  ). Anyways, as most will know, the pump track is filled with most 4-8 year olds this time. So you might get a clean lap in or end up helping a poor kid or two up one of the bigger rollers/berms.

Any ways, so whilst we going around (probably the 4th lap or so) an irate mother confronts Dave on the second straight (I only got stompies of this, so he'll have to share). The gist of it, "This is a kids track" and he referred her to the sign and management, to whom she briskly walked.

In the mean time we carried on doing our thing, waiting patiently for the kids, helping them if they fell etc.

In the interim, the mother returned to read the sign and promptly talk to her husband.

Confrontation

So while I was going around now, the husband chirps from the side of the second straight:

"This track is for little kids, and if you hit my child I'll f***en hit you!"

To which I respond (slightly out of breath, a few laps dopes that to a person :/)

"Have you seen me come even close to hitting a child on this track"

This ballie moved quick I tell you, from the out side of the track to the inner section of track before the 180 berm blocking my path. I thought he was trying to get me to ride into him to prove his point, so decided to just detoured around him on the grass and carry on.

Nope! Hi Stepped into me, thrusting his elbow into my shoulder almost pushing me off the bike!!

We proceeded to exchange words, and he was of the (Arrogant) opinion the sign with "Pump track" on it was for the bigger bmx track. After thanking him for physically assaulting me and correcting him, I returned to Harms, who was now visibility shocked and didn't want to ride anymore!

F*** it I though, and we carried on around the track for another 10min, under the beady eyes of this father. But Harms just didn't want to ride now.

After it all

We went to do some more trails and the bmx track and upon returning, found PWC finally had an official there. I decided I'm not going to let this slide (I'm normally very chilled with things) and went to the management desk, where they took our number as management was "out for an 1hr". The two at the desk seemed to not care at all.

I'm yet to hear back from PWC management.

Suggestions?

So we were talking post incident about what PWC can do to better remedy this situation. I know the parents and BDay parties are a cash cow for the park and help fund many of the upgrades. But surely there is a way to look after other riders as well?

  • Put a boundary around the pump track with a sign at the entrance like the skills area.
    • This will help prevent children/parents from just walking across the track.
    • Will be easier to show parents.
  • Inform parents where the kiddies pump track is upon entrance.
  • Set up times in half hour intervals or so, were kids can ride and then those over 13 can ride.

Have at it!

** For got to add, Afterwards, he sent his little boy to stand in the 180 berm and every time I came round, he would try jump in my way. So I'd just pat him on the head and laugh with him, cause he obviously thought it was a joke, but he was so cute you couldn't be upset with him!

Easy - PWc management must manage it; it's not for the customers to sort things out.

I did likethe OP better when i read it as "Dave, my significant other" and presumed that Harmony was your pet name for him.

Sorry to hear of your redneck encounter, there's a lot of it about.

I was there with NukeproofPeanut, and it was a pretty bad experience to say the least.

(I am however not his SO  )

There were a few children using the pump track, we didn't want to stop them using or enjoying it, we just wanted to use it too. We waited for a decent gap in the traffic each time so that we wouldn't end up right behind some child and make them uncomfortable, but with the amount of children it wasn't always possible.

While on a lap an angry mother started arguing with me, telling me that I should get off the "kiddies track". I tell her that the rules actually state that there should be no under 13s on the pump track. I pointed her to the actual kiddies track, to the skills area and to the sign which states the rules of the pump track.

She actually went to read the sign, but refused to believe it, and angrily stormed off to speak to management.

Some time around when this was happening NukeproofPeanut was confronted and pushed/hit by another parent.

The rules state that there are no under 13s allowed on the pump track, but it seems management will not enforce this rule. I don't mind sharing the pump track with children, but I shouldn't be made to feel like an a**hole and get argued with (or even physically assaulted!) when I try and use the facilities that I paid to use!

agreed, and PWC shouldnt allow bullying at all in the park. bigger and more signs for the pump is needed.

Wow that sucks, parents like that are no good to anyone. Personally I would have laid an assault charge, people like that shouldnt be allowed to get away with those things. Its getting away with it that lets them think its ok to do it again.

I was there yesterday as well. I asked at reception if all the trails were open and they told me that only Wetlands was closed. What a lie. As the OP said, on the other side of the highway only Ewok was open. Rust Preventer was half closed with the difficult berms under maintenance.

It was nice to ride the new Green Mile but that was about it.

There were a bunch of toddlers around the perimeter trails with adults that won't tell their kids to move to the side and let others pass.

At R60 I really don't think it's worth it.

I once saw a father watch his little son through a pair of high powered binoculars while he played a game of tournament chess......and afterwards shat on the little one for every not-so-perfect move he made. Sometimes I think some people should be sterilized early on.......

Ha ha! I agree, some people should be excluded from any legal procreation.

These people are usually the type that failed miserably at life and can't handle their kids also following in their footsteps.

Not in my experience.Invariably parents who have made a success at sport or whatever want their kids to emulate or even better them.Hammer and force the kids to follow in their footsteps and cant believe it when the kid cannot do so and fails and learns to hate what ever it is they are doing
