Hi all

I have a 2012 Volcan XC29er with a Shimano crank (BB70) installed. A sleeve was installed to adapt the frame to take the Shimano crank, but I am now looking at getting a SRAM crank.

On the Volcan website it says the bike takes a BB30, but then the same frame with different components takes a PF30 BB.

BB30

PF30

Will I be able to install either on my bike, or should I install a specific one? How will I know which my frame can take?

I know the crank will work both the BB30 and PF30 .

Any help?

The 30 is the thickness of the shaft. Bb30 takes 2 bearings in the bb shell. Pf30 takes 2 plastic cups containing the bearings pressed into the frame.

Yip.

Chuck that idea and get the Wheels MFG BB with alloy cups.

Sorry to be a pedant but 30 is the diameter of the shaft. the wall thickness of different axles varies.

Took me about 3 goes to work out what you were saying! Yes 30mm thick shaft would be very heavy.

I'm not a fan of press fit BB's.  The outboard BB's were so much kinder to the frames.

and the pocket...

if a frame doesnt have BSA as an option, I won't consider it.

not many around these days. Press fit only helps the manufacturer and not the end user. Worst system ever devised.

ja, maak my pis bitter but I fear soon BSA will a forgotten tech.

I just dont get the reasoning, why????

You now need special expensive tools to service it for what real benefit

Weight

Stiffness

I cant say I felt the pro's when I a pressfit bb

And be prepared to remove, clean and re-fit your pressfit bb if you have gone on a very wet ride. Otherwise it starts creaking..threaded bb for me thanks.

Luckily most steel frames still come with BSA.  Think this will be my next bike:

I hope for your sake the "sleeve" used on the Volcan was not this one from SRAM?

In the instructions below it says...."installation of the bottom bracket adapter into a carbon bottom bracket shell is permanent. The adapter cannot be removed. Removal will damage the adapter and bicycle frame."

You do get a "cup" conversion as well.
