After a recent race I decided its time to get one of those event-action-photos again. Not the low-res watermarked version. The real one for a change.

So Jetline Action Photo covered this race and I must say, I was pretty impressed with the results - until I saw the prices.

R67 for a standard 15x20cm photo! R71 for a digital (JPEG!?) version!??

I know Nene was pretty harsh this week, but seriaslee!?

anyways, hope the admin doesn't kick me for this.

Rant off.

I also thought prices a bit steep. So didn't bother.

Ditto, would have easily bought 3 for R 60, but not paying that for one

Ja these photos at events are priced too high... If they drop the price by half they will still make money as way more ppl would buy

I suggest you guys have a read through this https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/136640-event-photo-pricing/?hl=+photo%20+prices

Read it ... Still point stands .. This is a "mass" event... the guys are sitting next to the road with basic kit (did not see any light reflectors etc etc).  They press the button as guys ride past, no posing, asking to smile, lifting head to hide double chin.. :)

If they actually setup a full "booth" with proper lighting etc I would say yes, pay proper prices but these are all happy snaps. Most of the pics on the last event of me was really crap , head cut off, wrong person etc..

There was 1 pic that was ok , where you could actually see its me .. but not paying R 76 for jpeg.  Rather go pose in the garden and take selfie

I agree whole heartedly. I paid close on R400 to download all photos of me at Sani last year. I thought it was steep but the photos were really awesome, so I bit the bullet. Then, a couple of months later, the Berg & Bush photos came out and it was close on R500 for the digitial download package.

Now, I get these are decent photographers and taking photos does not come cheap, but R500 to download a couple of photos is bordering on ridiculous.

I agree where as you have mentioned above no effort has been made to get great pic's.

I was of the same opinion as you and still am in most cases, but when that truly great pic pops up I will take it.

I have always said people can charge what they want and if we don't like it we can take our business elsewhere, free market.

These guys however seem to have a monopoly at most events and we can't really take our business elsewhere.

Perhaps if the organizers would allow more than one photography vendor to take photos it would breed healthy competition.

it appears only when they have been commissioned to do events. There are many events in KZN where you will see or 4 different photographers all taking photos - giving you the option to buy from either of them - and since they are all dedicated photographers the shots are great....bring actionphoto along and no one else is allowed to take photos it almost appears.

Rika from cycle nation takes awesome start and finish photos and even sometimes during race photos(admittedly only of the vet or elite groups). And they free to download off cycle nations website. Yes I agree some action shots are always lekker and she did take some of me at the 947 during the race but I haven't ordered from jetline since they where still called portrait place.

She charges R50 per pic if you want them in hi-res.

Camera equipment ain't cheap.

Taking decent pics of moving objects that requires some special equipment and a decent lens are very expensive.
