low and behold there are still lots of cars in parking in the green cycle lanes, one gentleman parked in there this morning whilst there was a parking bay open in front of and behind where he parked his car outside of the battery center.

The best trick I've learn from commuting is keep a post-it in the back pocket and it should state something like this:

"Sorry I bumped your car but you are illegally parked so therefore this is your fault"

Although nothing was really done to his car it would make him think twice about parking illegally again.

excellent thinking...like it a lot

Please would you advise your staff not to illegally park in the dedicated cycle lanes as per the pic attached and also please refer to the link of a thread where this is was noted. It should also be noted that your company parks in the lanes numerous times a day and multiple vehicles too. I have before seen more than one of your vehicles parked in the green lanes at the same time.

We are as a cycling community put at risk every time a vehicle is parked or uses the dedicated green cycling lanes and are therefore working towards ensuring that other users are aware of and respect the green cycling lanes.

I will also be copying this email to the thread in order for the other users of that stretch of road to be aware that you have been notified in writing thereof.

Kind Regards

Hairy,

The guys from that company also park on the pavement on Loop street opposite their offices outside the Chris Barnard Hospital. They block the pavement and compel pedestrians to walk in the street into oncoming traffic. They just don't care...

Can anyone from the city confirm they are aware there are cycle lanes?

as in the city who paid for the cycle lanes aware there are cycle lanes or the drivers parking in a green colour lane with a dashed white line on either side and a big fat white bicycle stenciled in every couple of meters?

I think you are applying common sense to a government organization. :/

The person who painted them is not the same person that organized them and is not the same person that enforces them.

I have spent the whole day on foot in the City Centre and I am starting to think those cycle lanes are a total failure and a waste of money without enforcement. I saw several cars with fines attached for parking in a loading zone, but none of the numerous ones parked in the green cycle lane seem to have been fined. It looks to me like it is more dangerous riding your bike there now than it was before the lanes were painted. Weaving in and out and around  parked vehicles is risky stuff with traffic coming from behind. It is sad to see a good idea fail like this. Shame on you City of Cape Town. Grow some balls and take these offenders on. Fine them, tow and impound their vehicles. They will stop doing it!

Door of death on the link road between the cycle lanes along side the civic center to the lanes out of town. Just managed to swerve in time.

I often thought that is a sad reflection on the City that the area around their home, the Civic Centre, where all their offices are and where the mayor works from, is so dilapidated, disorganized and filled with dirt, grime and vagrants. I suppose that if your driver takes you into the basement parking, and from there you take the lift to your plush office, you never see how run down it looks outside where we cycle through. It is time they start walking around and look at their own proverbial backyard.
