Green cycle lanes in Bree Street misuse

I very often see the traffic cops fining parked cars outside the Cape Quarter area ... you know, where there is just about no street parking, but a huge underground payed parking area one can use.

Many of the cars parked illegally (as viewed from my window) are big ticket / expensive cars who park just where they please.

This is within a short walking distance from the traffic office though.

Ja, and in the meantime elsewhere in the city people park and drive as they please. Cops are absolutely useless. The only thing they focus on is speed traps as it gets them revenue. When I started driving you couldn't go longer than 10 minutes without seeing a cop on a bike or in a car so offences were punished. Now? It's chaos on the roads.

This was taken up nearly 3 years ago and it seems the situation has not changed.

I wrote to the City at the time, attaching photos and descriptions of vehicles parked dangerously and illegally. If they can't even go after what seem like sitting ducks (the vehicles involved), I don't feel full of confidence that the 1-metre law will be applied with any vigour.

When the 1 meter law was proposed I wrote to them explaining that it is totally unenforceable. How do you prove that someone was less than 1 meter away from a cyclist? Unless of course if there is an actual accident or it is filmed. How can you prove the cyclist didn't swerve at the last instant? If there's even a remote chance they did then the driver is not guilty and we know it's nigh-on impossible to ride dead straight.  Dedicated lanes which are enforced are the only answer.

I like your thinking, but you have to be sure of speed with the shoe option...had an issue with a spring-loaded mirror once...

Only the shoe has to be at speed..... the other foot can be firmly on the ground....

Out of interest, if you were riding in the cycle lane and then had to cycle around a car that was parked in the cycle lane and you then had to to dodge car that was in the road, which ended up with you crashing into the parked car, are you liable for the damage since the car was parked illegally?

I would imagine that you would be as you could reasonably see the parked car and made a decision to pass by in the road. The onus should be on you to make sure that the way is safe to do so.

But I get what you are saying ......

The area infront of RG JACK & SON seems to be the most problematic.

And this is every morning!

Bree street and the start of the work morning + a few hours whilst contractors run in and purchase materials.....but there will always be at least 1 car parked at that point during the day
