Question for the law

Hi all. I am having a chat with friends of mine, and the one guy is saying that you (on a bicycling) can not be fined for not stopping at a red light or stop street. The reason is that a bicycle is not licenced.

Being a regular hubber, i know its wrong and unsafe but thats not a point to stand on in an argument.

My question is, where is it written in the law that a bicycle needs to stop? Or where can i find it?

Thanks.

A bicycle is considered a vehicle on the road and therefore has to adhere to all the rules of the road that apply to vehicles ie. no running red lights, no riding on the pavement etc etc

Surely it's as simply as obeying the rules of the road

RED MEANS STOP

Rules punishable by a fine

As far as where it is written, this is SA it's written by the friendly officer giving you your FINE ;)

the importance of a good argument is that you know your subject well. Go and read the Act.

Alternatively:

Go and Google "South African Road Traffic Act"

Both the act and the regulations are free

Go to either section 1 or regulation 1 (also known as the Definitions)

There you will probably find the answer.

I was stopped by a traffic cop when I was a laaitie riding home from school. I skipped a stop sign and he pulled me over. I was scared out my bracket. But then again me and my buddy were pulled over in Umhlanga for riding a shopping trolley . Cop said it wasn't licenced and he made us push it 5 ks back to the shops. Those down hills weren't as much fun when you have to push it back up.

licensing and obeying the law are not linked. You are fined for breaking the law. Not having a licenses vehicle is breaking the law. A licensing exempt vehicle is not exempt from the requirements of the law.

Ill do some research and get back to you guys. I scanned through the act, and a search for the term bicycle did not show up .....
