TT/Tri bikes in mass cycling events

At the recent CTCT I saw a couple of riders on Tri bikes in the event, which was quite scary at some of the more windy areas.

I have come across the same thing at other events.

Surely this should not be allowed?

It isn't allowed.... Triathletes like people to know they are a big deal, that's why they always wear trisuits, compression socks and pointy helmets. The deep section zipp wheels on an R80k cervelo is also a must. They are superior to all other sportsmen, hence no rules apply to them. PS i take part in triathlons but for this very reason I refuse to be called a triathlete.

So why are they then allowed to start the event?  At CTCT you need to go through several "check ins" before you get to your starting pens

Can you imagine the magnitude of the tantrum that a self entitled triathlete with a R80k cervelo, deep section zipp wheels, trisuit, pointy helmet and compression socks (that paid an additional R20k in flight tickets and 5 star accommodation in CT) would throw at the start pen if refused access to start the race? I'd also let them pass...

Did they have race numbers? Or just pirate the course? Those tribikes make you poor so you can't afford entry fees.

Do unicycles, bmxs, ice cream bikes pass the UCI rules? Probably not.

I believe it has something to do with your hands not being close enough to your brake levers when riding on the aero bars in such close proximity to other riders (in case you need to stop quickly).  Most triathlons are non drafting, so no need to be near the breaks as there is no one in front of you who is going to anchor at a moments notice..

Apparently.... (but not confirmed) if you slide the aero bars far back enough so that the front ends are behind the brake levers then it is legal, but like I say, I have never been able to confirm this with a race organiser..

Sorry, BMX racing do comply to UCI, and they are supper strict because of the danger of this racing.

Rudi-H you have obviously come here to vent as you swim like a brick and run like a snail.  Back to the point up for discussion those guys should never have been allowed to ride the Argus.  I doubt even if they were Ironmen cuz Ironmen never draft.  In fact real men don't suck wheel in the first place.  Sucking wheel is something you roadies do that have a soft underbelly and limited talent (one sport).

it's a bit bad to generalise, as not all people who do these tri races are such dweebs. Anyone doing a mass event with big bunches on their TT bike is a dweeb.

It's peak unitard season right now with the big ironman coming up, so plenty of these dweebs on the road - clearly argus day was no different.
