Rumour without source will always be just that!

The ACE will never be like the TDF

It already is a road race - some sections just aren't tarred (yet).

How many roadies doing the Epic - epic!

Soooo let me get this right, ASO turned down a price of 100 million Safrican Rondt, or €7.69 million as being over valued only to then shell out €25 million?

You've got to love the interwebs.

euro probably strengthened since the first offer, but still a big jump.

Wonder if they would go for something like pioneer trek and throw their name at that. Is the ACE goodwill worth that much.

So many misconceptions from armchair warriors in this thread. At the end of the day selling the ACE will be a good business decision for Vermaak.

And ASO never made the Dakar a walk in the park, so why would they do that with Epic.

If this is true, maybe ASO will leverage their huge logistical expertise and contacts to make the race media package even better.

That's 313km :whistling:

313km on demanding terrain.

It would be very interesting to see what the total district and tar road vs st percentage would be for the epic. I ask this without malice towards the race, just very interested.

BC Bike Race!!!

The reality is that BCBR has large sections on tar and on water, or at least the logistics have. You take 3 ferry rides and you are bussed to the trailhead on most of the other stages. They are limited by the capacity of the ferry to about 550 riders, but since it only gets dark in summer after 10pm, you can start the stage at 1pm on certain days and still comfortably finish with daylight left. Upping this to 1200 riders or trying to squeeze an "adventure" and "ride" on is also not viable as the Vancouver Island ferry is basically hijacked when the race moves in and out. It is a huge consession from BC Ferries, and without their sponsorship the race format will change dramatically.

It will be possible to do this with the Epic, but will mean much smaller fields and either shorter stages or much tighter cut-offs to enable the logistics to move riders from location to location. The clover leaf format of years past was an attempt to bridge this challenge with moving riders from village to village which refreshed the event somewhat and saw some gems like Oak Valley and surrounds being better utilized. As an added bonus media logistics was also simplified with this format.
