Another Cape Epic buyout rumour?

313km on demanding terrain.

It would be very interesting to see what the total district and tar road vs st percentage would be for the epic. I ask this without malice towards the race, just very interested.

My average time on the stages was under 6 hours per stage, and I was not racing it. If I manage under 6 hours an Epic stage, I would be in the top 20% of the field. BCBR is hard, but can be done on less than 10 hours a week in the saddle.

May I ask you to work out how it would equate RE time/distance between the two events?

Not quite sure of the question, but here is some info on my 2013 BCBR. post-5386-1427103230,8463.jpg

Just noticed that the day 5 stats are not all there. The stage was about 55km, so not sure what happened there, my time is also out by about 3 hours. I may have switched my Garmin off after a fall that meant a single speed conversion and about 25 km of hike-a-bike combined with singlespeeding, and a R5k SRAM X9 RD...

Interesting reading.

I doubt the Epic is a "road race".

Loads of private entries doing the Epic still. I suspect most fund themselves and just use the opportunity to give either their own business or a business connection a punt on their kit.

Still loads of average South African Joe's out there entering the race.

Well if this is true 95% of us will now never be able to afford the entry fee ,if you thought it was pricy before wait till ASO get hold of it.

Rather 99.99999% of us.

Think winning time last year was 15 hours something. Nico Pfitzenmaier finished in the top 10 about an hour off the winner so compare that to his Epic.

Your definition of "average joe" seems a bit off. There's nothing average about the Joe's spending R50k+ on race entries and who knows how much on bikes and other bits. The event is very much for the way-above-average, in terms of income.

Like the Dakar there are a load of privateer amateur types who are self funded/sponsored riders who manage to find a way to ride.

There are plenty average joes who do manage though through various ways.

Charity entries like Spaniel Rescue with Reuben and Dagmar. Dagmar used to be an EMS medic, Reuben is an amputee. They're but one example of many.

For myself I managed to ride (2012) on a media entry combined with a charity we rode for. Both my partner and I hold down jobs in editorial and photographic work, by no means does that rake in the kind of disposable income for an entry.

So yes there are a lot of above average income people there, there's also a lot who have normal jobs who find a way to do it. And for the most part they're all good people who don't need to exist by other people's definitions of them in order to ride, and entirely grateful to be so fortunate to do so.

At the end of the day, does it ultimately matter if Cap Epic prices itself out of existence. There's no less than 50 other stage events in SA alone to choose from.

So rumor has it that Cape-Epic is sold to to the le Tour de France for 25mil Euro's.

Wonder if the format will change ? I bet it will get great TV coverage like tour le France.

The wheels must be in motion.

Facebook sent a notification the other day saying that the 'ABSA Cape Epic' page is to become 'Cape Epic'.

I head that the deal went through for 15mil Euro just a few days ago.

Well bloody done if that is true. That's a great reward for the hard work that's happened to create the CE brand and experience.

Another possible explanation may be that another rumour has come true, i.e. they may have lost the ABSA sponsership.
