Gerald can you share which hills you are referring to?

The best I can find riding from Meyerton side is to go into Mulbarton area but there is no real length to the climbs there

Mulbarton, Glenvista and Mondeor - the combinations are endless, and some of the gradients are stupid (we don't get these gradients in a race, but they're worth the effort).

You have to be prepared to stop at traffic lights robots though - and watch out for cars/traffic.

Let's assume you start at the Panorama Shopping Centre, Thaba Trails or Rietvlei (all relatively close to each other)

  • Up Butchers Hill, left into Impala.
  • Right into Springbok, right into Silver, right into Peggy Vera.
  • All the way to the top, left into Branksome Heights.
  • Right into Carol, Right into Pierpont, Right into Wisane.
  • All the way up to the top (near Southgate), then right into Constantia.
  • Left into Ashden, right into Columbine.
  • Straight up Columbine, over Klipriver drive into Vorster.
  • Left into Lois (passed Builders), left into Amanda.
  • Right into Beryl, then right into Oakdene Parks Drive.
  • Left into Rifle Range, left onto Klipriver Drive.
    • Optional: left into Bellairs, Left onto Walsingham Road, Left UP Biggersberg and Charmion, left into Vista, Left into van Beek and left into Klipriver drive (11% climb).
  • Passed Panorama shopping centre, left at Aspen Hills estate.
  • Left into Klipview Road, left into South Road, Right into Harling.
  • Right, and UP Hythe Road, over Bellairs, right into Mount Pellan.
  • UP Mount Pellan, right into Ouderberg, right into Basroyd.
  • Right into Pieter Ackroyd, Right DOWN Comaro (smile at the camera).
  • Left on Michelle (UP to Meyersdal), right on Hennie Alberts, right on Swartkoppies -
    • Turning right at Klipriver Drive back to Panorama will give you about 53Km, so you can always do two laps of the above route.
  • Right at T-junction (Lido) and up to Southgate.
  • Right left on Columbine, right on Rifle Range.
  • Right on Xavier, left on Vleiroos Road, right on Gerda (becomes Frangipani).
  • Left on Nossob, left on Swartgoud, left onto Columbine.
  • Right onto Klipriver Drive, and end at Panorama Shopping Centre.

77Km, 1306m of climbing.

Like I said - there are 101 different options here, depending on your willingness to explore and most importantly be prepared to stop at traffic lights.

I would start in Alberton, and include the Voortrekker Road climb out of Alberton, left up to the Silver Ball and then through Turffontein to Klipriver Drive and then right onto Impala, before riding the route.

A mate of mine stopped at the main gate of the Reserve last week to ask what then status quo was , and he was told by the Parks official at the gate that they are re-opening on 1 May .

jeepers thanks for all those options... will definitely add them in to my rides.

I normally do from meyerton out past kareekloof then past everite into alberton

- down klipriver

- right and do a loop up hythe road down bellairs back to klipriver

- up butchers all the way to the virgin active then back down

- right onto impala and down onto swartkoppies

- left at lido and back through walkerville

So you have given me plenty of nice options to add in that I didn't know existed

We've started adding some of climbs on my post to our normally flat rides out Walkerville, Bosco, Circus, Kareekloof side. Depending on the route, 130-140Km with more than a 1000m of climbing. Nice to add some hills before and after to spice things up.

About half of all street names in Glenvista ends with the word "berg", for good reason. Park your car at the shopping centre behind the Engen cor. True north and Bellairs . Knock yourself out. You will also find Gerald Ave up there somewhere.

What SBR doesn't have is traffic.

Just off Vista Drive - used to see it every Tuesday and Thursday on our winter training rides.

Throw in 7th ave in old Alberton too for good measure. Very good climb to get the heart racing and the legs nice and tired. Just bring your a game and take it all the way to the top

Can anyone confirm whether Suikerbosrand opened today?

"Latest communication from management indicates that the reserve will re-open in the first week of May. This will be after completion of repairs to the old water supply line. (The new water supply line is still far from completion, 10 years after the project began.) They tried to get temporary water tanks but were not able to do so before the budget closed on March 31."

I'll sign an indemnity saying I'll bring my own damn water and not hold them responsible should I be found dehydrated and curing like biltong on the tar.

Just need them to flipping open already.

Oh man I wish it would open. I swear it is the biggest negative impact on my lifestyle in years... Yes I know first world problems and all that but I love that place almost as much as the Drakensberg.

Actually the Drakensberg thing is an exaggeration and those mountains are in a league of their own but you know what I mean.
