Hi All,

If you in a crash at a cycling event, and need transport to the hospital, who covers the ambulance cost?

(Your own medical aid or the organizers of the event ?)

Great question.....

I would hope the organizers. But that's unlikely so you will or yr medical aid, hospital plan, insurance.

Should think your own med aid/hosp plan - that's why they ask the details when you enter.

When I broke my collarbone I (my Medical Aid) paid for everything. Some of it from the Hospital Plan and some of it from Savings Account. The total bill for the transport and emergency treatment was in the region of R3k-R4k.

What is maybe interesting in this context is that the Medical Aid would have paid an operation and titanium plate from the Hospital Plan but since I decided to have it heal naturally I had to pay all the consultations on the way to recovery myself (...from Savings Account). This even though my chosen path of recovery was net much cheaper than the suggested operation.

If it was at an event, doesnt our CSA licensing cover medical costs, etc?

Im almost sure part of the fee is for medical insurance, I may be wrong.

You are liable for the cost of transportation in the ambulance. the event organizers have to pay for the ambulance to be in attendance and deal with small injuries that don't require transport to hospital.

the organiser have to have an ambulance present that is equipped to take care of the most serious of injuries , able to stabilise you and transport you to the hospital. this should be included in the fee that they charge the organiser of the event. should the ambulance leave the event to transport a patient to hospital racing should be called off until a replacement ambulance arrives.

My wife was involved in a accident at a mtb event and transported 20km to the hospital. The event organisers paid for the transport even though we have a medical aid and offered to pay for it.

This is for CSA members and not for riders who have only taken out a day license.

I came off my bike at the Argus a few years ago. Was taken to hospital by ambulance. In the ambulance they wanted my medical aid details, phoned my wife who had the details. My medical aid paid R 4 800 for the trip.

Shudder to think of what would have happened if I did not have medical aid.

Is this applicable for any event, even such that are not CSA sanctioned?

I doubt very much that it will cover non CSA sanctioned events.  CSA do not want CSA members to even ride non sanctioned events.
