When should you help out a fellow rider?

Well if I was this guy I would tell said friend who had his bacon saved to send you a big parcel of thanks in the form of: (tick where appropriate)

Chocolate

Beer

Wine

Flowers

All of the above

It's should definitely be all of the above - all high end and more than enough to last month. At least that's what I would do if I were in this guy's shoes. Nix did save him some blushes.

No really if all of the above arrived on the doorstep I may be accused of infidelity. That's a list of things you send to an affair

Mhmm I can see how the wife might get upset by all that and the explanation might not be sufficient. So a month's worth of wine then?

. I don't take offense to being asked if I'm ok or guys stopping to help whether I need it or not ... It's chivalry, not sexism

Other day at modders, one of the ladies was new, she rocked up with flat tires, we went to pump them with the floor pump at the start of the trail and some guys came along and stopped - with a here let me help you ladies out - not that we don't know how to - it's just good upbringing. I'm old school - so to those ppl - thanks.

But I will add more cash to my coffee fund.. Just in case.

Just after the Shargus a friend of a friend invited us to come ride at Somerbosch near Somerset West. Naturally we said yes and when we pitched we decided to check our tyre pressure as I'd brought my floor pump along and we were still waiting for my friend's friend to arrive. A couple arrive and asks if they could borrow the pump and I say yes, which was a boon to us as the couple then proceeded to give us some much needed info on the area. It really help make that ride special as we could simply relax and enjoy ourselves.

Guys and girl, firstly thank you all for this thread, I just had load shedding and it kept me busy in the dark. Learnt a few things. I will carry a few more things with me on a race. I will always help someone when its not a race, in a race I will most probably leave you at your own mercy. Its a race, you are safe and there is help around the corner, be it a tech zone or sweepers. I am not racing for time or seeding, but I am not going to take the risk of needing my spares and not having it anymore. I get that it is the decent thing to do, but like it was mentioned, charity starts at home and it does all and up in terms of money. Please keep in mind if you pass someone with a flat on a race they WILL NOT die. Be prepared when you go out, be it a race or a training ride, if I am unprepared it is very unsportsman like for me to expect your hard heard money and time pent training to be wasted on me. Thanks again for the entertainment. P.S. take enough of everything for the monster.

I have run out of likes and I cannot like this enough !

That fine line between knowing how to be a gentleman and how to be a lady. Being able to ask for help and the confidence for the reply to be a yes or no. And neither party takes offence.

Now if a girl saw me on the side of the road and asked if I needed help, that is a game changer ;)

That happened to me when riding with a group of mates (all male).  One broke his chain and none of us had a chain breaker.   First cyclist to come past us was a chick.  At first they weren't even going to ask her, but decided to take the chance. .  She had all the tools and actually fixed the chain for my mate.  I was super impressed.

O and I have a very sneaky suspicion that a proper bike service before a race would go a hell of a long way in terms of carrying spares.

Agree. Picked mine up this afternoon in preparation for Sat. And based on what I got out of this thread, also stocked up on items I was missing. Forgot the darned hanger though. Going to have to go back tomorrow.

And practice with the chainbreaker on an old piece of chain. It is a bit of a feel thing the first time you do it. Actually insert a quicklink. Don't take the one you will carry completely out of its package - WHEN they fall into the grass or mud they are hard to find.

If you do have your bike serviced before a race then for goodness sake at least take it for a training ride before the said race!

What BB said

Race rule #1: Do not try anything new, especisly a freshly serviced (by someone else) bike.

this  +10000000

It looks easy on paper, i mean push out pin, insert quicklink and ride...but in reality

You need to insert the sram link so that the pin directional arrow is right...secondly, make sure the 10spd links lock(put bike on it back with wheels in the air, pull back brake and give the crank a hard tug...pin shoul be in place then) and then this little bugger is worth its weight in gold wrt issues...its light, small and fixes a bag of things...(from over tightened valves, stuck chainlinks..basically everything that needs a tang)

thankfully I'm not experienced in that...well thanks in any way or form is in order anyway

on another note

I remember one sani at the last WP on Day 2 a guy was looking sheepishly around asking people for a pump...I pulled one off my bike and the look of glee was evident....he had apparently been there for 20 mins and not a soul wanted to give him a bomb as most people had only one or none ( ) and didnt want to risk it...and no-one had a pump....we had 4 bombs between us and a pump!
