Physio vs. Chiropractor

There is a very limited role for using an xray in the work up of back pain. The most common problems are prolapsed disks or locked facet joints, neither of which are diagnosable on xray. These are soft tissue injuries and any decent physio is better at making the diagnosis than the majority of GPs. The remote chance that you have a vertebral stress fracture or osteoarthritis is about all an xray can show. Try extensive rehab before seeing an orthopaedic or neurosurgeon. You dont want spinal surgery unless it is a matter of or death - i.e. you want to take your own life because of pain.

Good research has show the same long term outcomes of spinal surgery compared to conservative management for 18 months.

Disclaimer: I am a doc, not an orthopaedic nor neuro surgeon. I am married to a physio with a masters degree orthopaedic rehab who is doing a PhD thru sports science institute.

........some say I am also a MD........direct translation of it will be Big Box.

PS: conservative treatment does not put a new Merc in the garage, or buy a holiday house........but it can save the patient a whole lot of trouble and chieng.

I am with strecth here, physio to solve the acute pain and biokinetics to figure out WHY you get the pain to start with. Sorry but chiro's arent called "ruk en pluk" in afrikaans for no reason; they get things popped back into place but does no good to figure out why it went out of place to start with

I went to different physios for years for pain in my muscles between my shoulder blades. Never really helped. Then I went to a chiro twice 1 week apart and the problem was solved. Never had any pain again and its been about two years now.

Maybe I am just lucky in that I have an excellent chiro.

He is the only person who has helped with my ITB.

He also gives me stretches and strengthening exercises to sort out my week points.

That said, I also have a very good physio who I need to see sometime very soon for a groin strain.

For back or neck, I always go to my chiro first.

I did both physio and chiro and they both knew I was seeing the other one.  Sometimes you're out of alignment and then the muscles spasm but physio just isn't enough to let the muscles relax which would theoretically put you back in to alignment.  So for me getting put back in to alignment via chiro and then seeing the physio a couple of days later to help the muscle spasms and vice versa did the trick for me.

It helped though that both professionals that I saw are really good at what they do and are willing to work outside the box.  And both also are big sports enthusiasts.

Hi guys/girls.

I have some back pain that is getting to me. I have been to my GP and he gave me a Voltaren shot, he said it does not feel like a slipped disk or as if anything is out of place. The shot seems to have helped as have the anti inflamitorys. But it still hurts and I'm getting miff with not doing any thing. So who do I go to? A physio or a chiro?

Thanks!

Chiro will make you fell good now - and f*** your back up for all eternity

Physio will make you feel like s*** - but your back will be fixed

Chiropractors are dangerous... beware

I have been to all these people and they all add value is the right circumstances. I must agree STONGLY that the first thing you need is a proper diagnosis.

Treat the cause and not (only) the symptom.

I see a very good Chiro, a very good Physio, a very good GP and recently, a very good Neurosurgeon. They have all done great for me when I see them for things in the areas they specialise in!

Please tell me how it is that a person can be a "professional" and a "Dr" but cannot be held accountable or found negligent. Nice position to be in. A bit like buying voetstoots....

Had it not been for a chiro I would've had a spinal fusion years ago. "Your only option ", is what the specialist told me. Chiro explained that a nerve was pinched between L 5 and 6 But the cause of this was a "sticky " joint between my hip and sacrum. When I was bending my spine was not. And the doctor did not see this.

There was no instant fix ,it took about a year .I used to get episodes , but this was mostly from overdoing things in the gym etc.

It is now thirty years later .I ride my bike and go to gym. He saved me from a back operation.

He was honest ,told me that I may need an op in years to come .He would recommend the doctor.

Another thing was that many sore backs if just left alone would get better.
