Totally agree, I once came 7th in a 20km MTB race, 4 of those who beat me were youngsters, had they started off in their own group after me I would have got 3rd place and R50 prize money.

You must have been crushed Scotty. I'm glad to see you managed to pick yourself up and move on.

Gees, people complaining about kids on the 20km race... My problem is much, much worse. 13 year olds flying past on the long routes is much more of an issue.

Solutions to this issue can include sticking a cunning branch into their front wheel, a sly uncleated shoe to their body... Or you can just be mature and let them have fun outside in the fresh air.

Thanks Nick, well that being said...his expectation is quite ridiculous.

He wants to do the 20km fun ride but is concerned his time and about people stopping in front of him and laaties riding all over the show. Does he want people to part like the red sea when he comes up to them...There is a sense of entitlement here cause he paid for his entry and now the whole world must dance to his tune.

Dear OP, NO you are wrong...nobody feels like you do. If you want less children and housewives well then do the longer distances. Work on your fitness and sign up for them. Moaning about the lack of talent or etiquette in the 20km fun ride is like moaning about traffic on the N1 on monday mornings between 7 and 8AM. You need a bit of a reality check wrt what a race is and where the times are taken seriously.

Someone said it earlier, but the organizers should really not time the 20km fun ride...its like the points in whose line is it anyway...they dont matter.

I've encountered youngsters on some routes where the long route joins the shorter route. I'm not a fan of this arrangement but that is for another day.

I actually enjoying seeing these youngsters busting their lungs out and going for podium. I enjoy seeing mommy pushing the bike or waiting for the family to regroup, daddy riding behind his son etc. For me it is what life is about, go out and enjoy yourself. In fact most of my assistance I gave was with this group. Nice seeing the fat dude in his chops, on his debut ride but satisfied with himself. Then the old toppies still cranking it out. So yes Lizel, I hear you but the short rides are there precisely so that everyone gets game. Do the medium or longer routes and you will get more flow

I agree with Rouxtjie!

If you are not racing the 20km then you shouldnt be timed. For the youngsters(under 13's), this is the only distance they are allowed to race, so I wouldn't take that away from them. I think a good solution then would be to put the timed 20km riders in A batch, and send of the rest 10min later.

If people are irritating you on these short rides, upgrade to longer distances, get a proper seeding and ride with people of similar capability to yourself. Quite easy actually...

Still such a ridiculous complaint. I think the sincerity of Nossie does not excuse her of some ridicule and honest question marks due to the absurd complaint.

No way anyone can take that serious. She deserves, and should expect the replies she got.

The last thing such a complaint deserves, with respect Nick, is "feedback constructive and related to the complaint".

EDIT: And no, that is not my opinion as is evident from the 5 pages before my post :)

To you it might look absurd.

But to Nossie it is not.

Just a thought......

In 2 years time I am going to race the funride with my 4 year old, and will teach her to hang onto wheels. May we stop to take some Gu's? I wil let her race with her sidewheels so that she doesn't need to stop at rock gardens or tight switchbacks. Will that help?

Good suggestion lapa

Organizers normally have three events on a day...marathon, half and fun ride. The aim is to cater for the whole family as a day out on the trails. The marathon for pappa and really strong mammas that thinks they are nino schurter. This is the serious event for grownups. Its challenging, you are timed and prize money involved hence the pro's play here. The half marathon is for up and coming teens(A-batch) and mammas and pappas that are slightly less seasoned, doesnt really train in the week and ride because they want to shed a bit of weight / join in on their partners mtb adventures. The 20km fun ride is for the real youngsters...they just doing it to be part of the day's events..As I pointed out, the OP is trying to make it something it isn't...a serious race.

When my daughter is old enough I am going to be doing some of the 20's with her. I honestly cant wait. We will be chilled, having a laugh and be in nature for the morning. That is what its about...not your time

As sincere as her post was I think she received SINCERE replies as well. Obviously she wont get the type of reply she wants from a cycling community that believes the trail belongs to everyone and is there to enjoy for everyone including runners, walkers etc.

We all love cycling. We all deal with slower and faster riders and we all share the trails with young and old. Saying kids on the trails are frustrating wont win you ANY favor here and thus I think she got the replies she deserved.

Dont mess with the kids, let them enjoy the day, As a dad the last thing i want is some lady screaming at my kid as she feels the R50 at the finish line has her name on it.

Clearly not just to me... but I get what you're saying.

"They come past like maniacs, suddenly break in front of you...."

Then stay away from racing, its part of it and happens in all races and distances....

Slow adults in longer races cause the same, faster riders will fly pass.

Huh?  or get another sport, maybe chess or a book club.
