moving to CT, best areas to live for mtb from doorstep

Just move to Paarl dude.  R90k a month settes you on Val de Vie Polo and Wine Estate and you'll still feel like you're living in the countryside.

Stellenbosch and Somerset-West are crime-ridden.

Is Paarl worth me considering given my criteria?

and is it loads better for security then?

If so i'll add it to my list of places to visit when I head down

Yup, you'd be looking around that figure.

Wow, don't know if its a location thing

ok thanks

staff costs are a lot more expensive  (i knew there must be something!)

Does that mean its about 5-6k a month for someone full time?

Don't know if different locations make a difference, but we pay less than that for someone who works full-time cleaning and looking after my son.

Normally in my area people pay +- R200 daily if you want someone once a week or on an adhoc basis.

Paarl is like Wellington....absolutely awesome...except you can die of the heat in summer

I am in the same position as you in that I can choose where I want to live. My 1st choice is Somerset West. 2nd Choice would be Stellenbosch (Stellenbosch would be 1st choice but Somerset West is just a nicer place to live, better property options). Try to get a house close to Waterstone Village in Somerset West, that is where the Wannabees mtb trail starts.

O.M.F !!!

What kind of salaries are you okes earning?

Hahaha! Thanks for that post Wannabe, you make me feel better...

If someone asks something like this in all sincerity

If say for example someone had 90-100k a month, would that be passable for an ok lifestyle in the bosch?

I have to wonder if we actually live on the same continent because we are definitely living in completely different worlds!

Quade - I am sure on your budget you will something in the Western Cape to get by, you just have to be prepared to look hard...

Paarl has been voted best Municipality in the Western Cape a few times, is home to arguably 4 of the best schools in the Country (all public schools i.e. max R35k a year in fees), has a rapidly growing economy and the property market is climbing (more and more multi-nationals and listed companies are setting up shop there).

It's a very outdoors-friendly town, solid policing, mostly petty crime and it's within 100km of 99% of the best trails and tourist attractions in Western Cape.

I live in a suburb in Paarl and we are very happy.  If you really want to burn R35k a month, then there are three private estates to choose from, but I think your money will go way further just living in the town itself.

I'm serious when I say you'd have to pay me to live in Stellenbosch.  The crime really is getting out of hand there and frankly it is 50% more expensive than Paarl.

thanks man.

I earn in dollars, and the rand is very weak (as opposed to a strong dollar)

So its grossly exaggerated right now, i'm sure that wont be the case forever.

Sorry if I came over as obnoxious,

I think we just live in different economies

Its funny reading what you wrote, because we struggle to make ends meet some months:

http://www.nation.co.ke/news/-/1056/2756246/-/14n1q2xz/-/index.html

All my SA friends are on BIG money here, i'm by far the poorest (my house is made of mud!...no honestly it is!)

One SA friend calls it velvet handcuffs, they would love to move back to SA, but the NGO packages they offer here are very good money, and they said they could never get close to it in SA, these guys are easily on double or triple what I earn.

People seem to come out on 2-5 year contracts

you would be looking at earning 10,000 USD per month to live comfortably and still save a little each month (without kids)

If you got offered 5,000USD, it wouldn't be worth coming (certainly as a family)

My friend has 4 kids, and it costs him about R 1,100,000 just in basic annual school fees (no trips, lunch etc included)

State schools aren't an option here.

So yeh, just vastly different economies!

It is completely different worlds, 1st world vs 3rd world countries. No demand for my IT skills in 3rd world countries, they lag too far behind. So I have to work for overseas companies where salaries are higher and my skills are in greater demand.

About the internet, I also need it for dev work and Somerset West has wireless to cable providers like HX Sytems that can give you a proper unlimited 10mb connection. Look at these areas in Somerset West: Schonenberg Estate, Helderview, Steynsrust. If you enjoy riding with other people there are 2 active mtb clubs and many options for riding mtb with others.

Definitely not, but as you pointed out, your dollar earnings put you in a very different "price bracket" than the average Western Cape hubber - with your budget you can pick and choose around here. I'm sure you'll have a great stay here

Thanks fella.

Paarl sounds financially tempting.... i'm a cheap skate at heart, growing up on the breadline and with single parent I got it drummed into me!

And the security aspect is very appealing.
