Garmin International Inc. today announced the Varia line of smart cycling devices, including a first-of-its-kind rearview bike radar and smart bike lights. Helping create a safer cycling environment, Varia rearview bike radar warns cyclists of vehicles approaching from behind up to 140 meters (153 yards) and also warns approaching vehicles of a cyclist ahead, and Varia smart bike lights automatically adjust to changing conditions as well as the speed of the cyclist. Both the radar and lights work independently, or seamlessly integrate with each other and with compatible Edge cycling computers, allowing cyclists to customize to their needs.

Wasn't this the dude in Stellie's product?  I seem to remember them being bought out by Garmin?

It is the Backtracker, developed in Stellenbosch,

Link that to the Best After Sales Service in the country, and it's a Winner! I'm so glad it's Garmin that brings these products to the market.

I remember we told Franz/Backtracker guy sorry bud your planned pricing(around R2500) will be too expensive. Garmin get hold of it with their enormous scale of economies/distribution in place etc, what'd you know they charge a whole lot more for it than Backtracker :(

Do you know what would be great, would be if the garmin cycling computer was able to talk to garmin vehicle or any car GPS and let them know there is a cyclist ahead.

I am sure that is the next step

Awesome, bit pricy for everybody to jump at, but very cool

Very proud to have had our Tour de Boland Event Director, Carinus Lemmer, head PR and Media for this product's earlier version. Carinus was also part of the delegation that initially met with Garmin representatives at Eurobike last year.

Expect plenty of Garmin and Varia product on the 2016 Tour de Boland - signed up yet?
