Stolen: S-Works Tarmac SL3 2011
When: 6 July 2015
Where: Cape Town, Western Cape

Well never thought it would happen to me!!!

Bike jacked on the old Marine Drive bus route this evening at 5.45pm. This is the dedicated bus and cycling track that connects Cape Town to Milenerton..

I was cycling up the bridge towards Paarden Eiland (from Town) just after the Woodstock bus terminal. I crested the top of the bridge where I saw two black gentlemen walking head with their backs toward me. The angle of the bridge and the side wall obscured my view of them so I was unable to see them beforehand. As I approached them (20kmh says strava) , one of the male turned and stepped into the road to try make me cycle between then, at this point I knew what was happening, so I hopped the pavement & tried to escape but unfortunately couldn’t, they knocked me off my bike in the middle of the road. Before I could get up both men they were on my back with knife to my neck and held what potentially could have been a gun to my chest. I cannot say for certain it was a gun as it was concealed in new paper or wrapper of sorts. The actions suggested it was a gun. They escaped through the broken fence that abuts the N1 & the start of Marine Drive flyover.

They were very well organised and knew exactly what they were doing, they were very well dressed both with caps so couldn’t get as good look at them. The most disappointing thing was that no less than 8-10 busses drove past me and would stop to help or even just radio for help. I repeatedly called 10111 and various other emergency numbers that just rang off. I am hoping to obtain the video footage of the incident and will post this soon.

To all the boys that ride that route in summer to Killarney & back be warmed. It’s not safe. Apologies for the bad English but pretty shaken up right now! Silly to cycle alone but normally loads of busses, traffic cars & commuters that time of day.

Happy cycling stay safe!

Bleak man, glad you are safe. That is the exact route I take.

So was it on the way up to the main road above? Bleak no one stopped to help.

It was on top of that bridge between Woodstock and Paarden eiland bus terminals on the cycle track!!! Skellems...

Tough one man, hard to handle those situation when they actually happen, always have a ninja move in your head thinking about the eventuality but when you see the knives/guns pointed at you with the callous attitudes you knew how screwed you are. I've been mugged before and its weird how horribly alone you feel even with people driving past just meters away, you might as well be on the moon for all the help you are offered.

Glad you are unhurt!

Sorry for you experience and loss stoffie.

Sad thing is last night I noted in our group we need to collect bunting tape as I want to highlight all the holes and broken sections of fence and also make laminated A3 posters to be put up near that section proclaiming it as a high Mugging location.

Ah man, that's super bleak! Rode through that section solo just after 5pm yesterday. What to do today?! I know it's a hot spot so I'm always vigilant but that can only do so much. Agree with Upshift, there must be spotters somewhere especially when you consider these "gentlemen" had their backs to you.

Sorry you had to endure such a *** experience stoffie, awful end to the day!

Mate of mine was attacked at the exact same spot and time about three weeks ago. Also two attackers.

In his case, the MyCiti bus stopped and the attackers ran away.

Sorry to hear bru..

I really feel we should stand together and fight back, some how and some time, and I assure you they will think again..

I ride every now and then with taser gun only when i do solo rides, don`t be scared to fight back!!!

These guys think we scared and will just give up our bikes when confronted with a gun or knife!!!

GLAD YOU OK, glass half  full side of the conversation, you alive and well(physically) what boils my piss, any car could have just slammed on brakes making a noise drawing attention and these cowards would have bolted, SA needs to employ mercenaries and send them out on bikes hunting these creatures down, maybe 50 spread over trouble spots with the bike of choice specialized   they getting like hiluxes,,, just not worth riding them ,we need a few headlines bike high jackers seriously injuired during ATTEMPTED HIGH JACKING just to  set the mind set that we not soft targets,,,sadly we are though
