On a more positive note, Chiara and Phillip went on a serious walkabout last night and made it to Masakala at midnight. Huge up to them. That would have been cold and scary.

I really hope it was an innocent mistake and maybe used in desperation. I know the country, not the trail sadly, of the E Cape / KZN section of the FT, having researched it for a trip (got sick though). It is remote, plenty naughty folds and false crests, and I guess, very scary at night. It's very quiet even in the day, in winter, on a motorised bike.

Good luck to the participants, envious from my safe, warm chair. Weekend weather not looking that good at a glance.

They also had a broken pannier which set them back a lot. They decided to get rid of some not so essential items and carry on. The phoned the SOS number and got guided in over the phone.

Chiara and Philip were lost out in the pitch dark with a broken compass, etc. It was good that they called and that I was able to set them back on track, but it's important to remember that they were the one's who held the key's. Perseverance and integrity.

Looking forward to seeing them wax it today.

And they have now just left Vuvu to tackle Lehana's. I hope that they can get the bulk done in the light.

I actually cant watch.  Are they taking the Naudesnek pass up or are they going the wrong way back on their tracks??

They've missed the Lehana turnoff. Hopefully they realise the error before it becomes a very long night.

Edit - maybe taking the alternate 4x4 route??

I am hoping that they are taking the alternative route up, as far as I know you can avoid Lehana by taking the long way around to the Naudesnek pass (R396) - not an easy route by any means but at least its dirt and less opportunity to get lost in the dark, providing that they can get to it in the light.  Im just hoping that where Chiara and Philip are now, is that route up?  They seem to have gone off on my tracker - just sitting still in the valley at 14.19.

They are taking the alternative route. Long day and serious guts, these two.
