Dear hubbers.

I have not posted much lately as im sure many of you have noticed. However i need to post this on open forum as there is some confusion that has come to light recently.

Please this is not a thread to bash anyone nor is this a thread for lengthy debates or name calling or what so ever. i will not get involved what so ever.

As most of you know i do carbon fiber repairs and also resprays. I get inundated with requests and work and i need to thank everyone for that. All the support is phenomenal and without you as my supporters i would not be able to make a living, especially as i do not advertise at all and all work that comes in is all referrals. So for that i am humbled and thankful.

So as you read I'm sure you are wondering what I'm on about, well in short, ETHICS.

I have had some strange and weird requests over the last few years and in general i never say anything about it. Im ethical and will not in any way do or get involved with anything unethical. So just a general rule from my side that i need to get out in the open regarding carbon repairs.

When anyone, elite athlete, celebrity, joe soap or whoever brings me a frame to repair that has ALL READY been claimed for either through distributors or insurance I WILL REMOVE your serial numbers from your frame. The reason for this being that should i do a repair and you or anyone claim on that frame again it will be FRAUD and i will not connect myself to this in any way or form.

With repsrays and general repairs serial numbers stay as far as it is possible.

Thanks for reading.

Happy riding guys and girls

Just a comment - perhaps add a different serial number back so it is traceable in the event of loss or theft - otherwise it will be a mission to prove ownership.

Constructive, me likey. Definitely a good plan V12man. I will add a bogus designs serial number to such frames then in the future.

Hmm

So here is a genuine problem i have.

I hear you, and agree its your choice, so below is a problem that is mine.

I have an issue where my frame has cracks around the seatpost, not bad, but it is insured.

So what if I claim on the frame, decide to buy the salvage from the insurer and get it repaired to use as my wife's bike.

Its like getting in to an accident and needing to panelbeat your car. You dont remove the VIN Number. And even if written off its still has a VIN Number on it.

This was a plan I was thinking of. Its not unusual nor unethical - my Dad was in insurance and all our cars were salvage repairs etc - they worked fine.

You see the thing is this - I can't sell the bike with cracks and if i get it repaired I have to disclose it.

SO I am screwed.

I have to claim - that is if I want to preserve the value.

So I was thinking of doing the above.

Just saying.

I know there are a lot of unethical operators out there but not all of us are skelms and some people genuinely need a repair. The intention isnt what matters.

True story but in the case of a salvaged car it gets coded as either a code 3 or 3 or whatever so whenever the vin number gets traced it will show up as said code.

We do not have a national database where said salvaged bikes can get coded so unfortunately we are screwed either way. All i am trying to do is cover myself from falling into an unethical world of nonsense.

I do on average 10 to 15 repairs on salvaged bikes a month then gets sold through bike shops who in turn caries some warranty and ALL yes on all i get instructed BY THE INSURANCE to remove the serial numbers. So this is not just something that i have overnight sucked out of my thumb to do.

Very informative thread. In a way I'm glad busted warranty frames are not just turfed and can get a second life to make a rider happy. Am surprised by the volume going through one guy, you must have good data on what frames/make not to buy!

I just want to add.

I have send bogus a frame and actually there is a frame of one of my friends lying at him.

I want to say that this is a real gentleman and as you say in afr "n mens mens".

I think what he is doing for the industry is very good and I will honour and respect every decision this man makes.

I have met him and he is really a good dude, so for doing this to cover himself I will support him all the way.

Remember this is south africa :nuke:

Good on you Bogus. Just another reason why you'll always be my go to guy wen it comes to painting and repairing my bikes.

Keep it honest, cause you can't really trust people to do so on their own nowadays!

I agree with V12, I think that there needs to be a serial number of sorts.

Before you unilaterally remove the number get the owner's consent, put it to the owner that if you repair the frame that you will remove the serial number and create your own. If they decline then send back the frame and decline the work.

Great ethics though.

You did my frame and put up with all of my nagging and terrible picture drawing and colouring. I appreciated that.

Hi Monark

Totally agree and yes a serial number will be supplied for tracking purposes.

Please note that this rule as mentioned in my OP ONLY applies to "frames that has ALL READY been claimed for either through distributors or insurance "

The normal day to day repairs if i can call it that and resprays will NOT lose its original serial number.

Hope that clears up any confusion there might have been.
