ScottCM Posted June 28, 2016 Author Posted June 28, 2016 (edited) Anybody else know any nice marathons around Jhb etc later this year I might have missed - calendar seems pretty light? Besides the 100 miler, which is way to rich for my novice blood, the only one is in October Edit : And City 2 City if it happens Edited June 28, 2016 by ScottC-M Lexx and Andrew Steer 2
Jackes Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 So who is back to training already? If not when does everyone plan on starting? Our 4th week of training (resumed) building towards first OMTOM and comrades is done... Nice interview with the comrades winners' coach.https://themarathon.co/2016/06/21/john-hamlett-colonel-coach/ With this bad news..."I believe that every Comrades runner should do two thirds of the Comrades distance three times before Comrades itself. The top runners are doing that so why not the back runners?" ScottCM 1

The top runners are doing that so why not the back runners?" Okay, I'm the noob in running - but surely that makes sense? If you aim to run a marathon, you're surely not going to do 10 or 15k max and hope for the best on the day... you HAVE to do runs of at least 35k's beforehand. Likewise for cycling - you're not going to ride TransBaviaans having just done training for an Argus. So why would it be different for Comrades?

To fully recover after 42k takes the average amateur a month. This means (speaking from personal experience) that your training period is extended. You normally can't wake up one morning in June and decide to run Comrades the next year (assuming you aren't already fit) I did OMTOM this year and my build up was 14 months. Which included 2 Marathons and a 30ish long run every second month.

Likewise for cycling - you're not going to ride TransBaviaans having just done training for an Argus. So why would it be different for Comrades? Not necessarily..running is also all about time on your feet..For example..my first comrades..outside of one 52 ultra and 2 marathons - all my training was concentrated on distances of 8 to 27km. BUT - i did lots of them regularly. This year, I did one marathon and distances of 10 to 30. Its not about the distance in one sitting...but more about how you train...hill repeats...track work...long slow runs...time trials etc etc. Obviously if you are going for silver etc..then you need lots of 30km plus runs.. 2017 comrades I will be doing more intervals and hill repeats etc and a few more long slow 30 - 35 runs than i did this year...but otherwise all the same
Lexx Posted June 30, 2016 Posted June 30, 2016 Yip,needs to do lot of hills. I will also start a Gym program next month to do some Weights just to make me stronger. I actually ran my first Bill Rowan on the Up Run. And I walked the whole of Polls Shorts. Hate that little Bump. Lol

Does the article say over what period the 3 long runs ( 2/3 of comrades = 60km ) should be done? Not easy for the average runner who works a full day to accomplish and recover from. Lexx 1

Lexx Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 (edited) This is prob going to be a long shot, but does anyone have a Skukuza Entry they not going to use that I can take over? Edited July 4, 2016 by Lexx
ScottCM Posted July 5, 2016 Author Posted July 5, 2016 ja - I cant really help - as I pretty much just run at my marathon pace while training. A fast HM 6 weeks prior to a marathon is totally doable. Evn if you race a HM, the impact on your legs is negligible. Keep an eye on OM World of endurance site. You can login using your strava profile, and I think it then will use that to forumalte generic training plans for you. Doesnt seem to work now though http://dogreatthings.co.za/running/training-guides/#fakelink They seem to have fixed the link now. But it gives you a generic Sub 5 / 3 hours marathon training plan http://dogreatthings.co.za/running/training-guides/
ScottCM Posted July 5, 2016 Author Posted July 5, 2016 Here are the Old Mutual Training programmes for a Marathon, maybe some beginners might want to use it to train for their qualifier, Novice : beginner_novice.pdf Sub 5 Hour : 42km_beginner_sub_5_hours.pdf Sub 4 Hour : 42km_beginner_sub_4_hours.pdf Sub 3 Hour : 42km_beginner_sub_3_hours.pdf They are all an 11 Week training programme which consists of between 5 & 6 days of running a week. Downfall is that there is no pacing times given so you will need to know your own 10km / marathon / Easy / LSR times Lexx 1
Ferret69 Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 There is also the attached Asics Marathon Training programs that are Brilliant, they have pacing as well, but are based in Miles, so you will just have to make a little Conversion Chart for Pace/Distance to kms. (I have made one if anyone wants it) Myself and 3 mates all used the sub3 guide last year and all took between 10 and 20 mins off our marathon Pbs.. We followed the 3hr programme but took all Fridays off as a Full rest day Attached the 3hr and 4hr, there are others online if neededASICS_TRAININGPLANS_Sub 3.00.pdfASICS_TRAININGPLANS_Sub 4.00.pdf Lexx and ScottCM 2
ScottCM Posted July 5, 2016 Author Posted July 5, 2016 For those whom want to follow Coach Parry's programme, the July plan for the various medals are on the comrades website. Lexx 1
