Lexx Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Its not unfortunate at all in my opinion....Clubs are why there are so many races to choose from and why they are still relatively cheap when compared to trail running and mountain biking. support your local club...run in their time trails...and compete in the inter club time trials.Couldn't agree more. The Club Braais and beers afterwards are the best. Stretch, Andrew Steer and Frosty 3

Khronis Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Thanks for the replies. At the moment i just don't have enough time on my hands to be able to join a club and join in the time trials and club runs.I know i could join a virtual club but would rather join a "real" club and get the support and experience of runners who have been around the block a few times.

I love my running club and made friends for life. At Johnson Crane, almost 3000 Team Vitality members participated. I don't think the Team Vitality Members know one another except maybe your close running mates. I knew exactly that from my club who will be running the marathon / 21km and the times they are aiming for. You know the pace of fellow club members and if you can keep up with them. You help each other. I don't think you will get the same support from the virtual clubs. Tubehunter and Mr Winter 2

ScottCM Posted February 3, 2017 Author Posted February 3, 2017 Couldn't agree more. The Club Braais and beers afterwards are the best. This is what is missed with Virtual clubs +1 I'd almost go as far as to say... virtual clubs suck Support the sport, support the structures that give us so many great races at far more economically friendly prices - let's not go down the route cycling has gone! After this season i shall be leaving my 2nd virtual club and be joining a club in my area. i doubt i would do much club runs etc but i definitely believe in supporting the people who try and put back in the sport vs those whom try reap the profits from an armchair. Andrew Steer Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 i dont do any club runs with my club as the core guys i would run with are about 50km away...and its just not practical...but even if its helping with the club race and the end of year braai only....its still worth it Similar for me... My club is my schools old boy club, been a member through waterpolo/rugby for over 20yrs... and running the last 5yrs. It's over 30 minutes away for me (on a good day - northcliff to houghton), so just not viable for club runs, time trials etc. But I do see them at all the races, we cheer each other on en route, we have a beer and boerie roll after every race in the shade of our gazebo. My only bit of 'work' is we organise one race a year (and help at 1/2 others if we can), which covers most expenses and allows the club to subsidize the odd bit of merchandise for big events (a Comrades jacket/cap or something cool), a lekker pre Comrades breakfast, post Comrades aches & pains party - accom and travel costs for the Comrades seconds etc It's such a big part of the whole journey to Comrades... wouldn't want it any other way ScottCM, Stretch and Lexx 3
SeaBee Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Have to agree on the club thing. Ran for the club for the first time and even though we were not plentiful, every time we saw somebody else from the club (and only one guy knew me!) there was a very lekker mutual greeting and cheering on. Likewise for the club of my buddy, with whom I ran for a bit. Great fun! You did not see Vitality (to name one) peeps doing that...
candz1 Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Some clubs are very "clicky"..and really hard for a newcomer to running to get accepted. I left my club for that very reason. Would love to join the run/walk for life club in my area but decided to go the Vitality route for this year until my son is not reliant on me being at home at 5.30 to do homework and supper. On that note though..im still waiting for my license so maybe a virtual club not best option.
Tubehunter Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Left the virtual club and joined the local running club! Amped to see what the scene is like. Just need to get back to training! Speaking of which, had my first mostly pain free run of the year this morning! Almost felt like it was the start of getting back into the schedule!!!! candz1, ScottCM and Andrew Steer 3

Picked mine up on Monday. Am doing the virtual club as need to be flexible with my triathlon training
Stretch Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 ran part of the new comrades finish today...as you turn off washington road onto murray you have a little down and then a nasty little up..then flat....the little hump over the freeway. Then you turn left onto cleland and its a beautiful long gradual downhill...up over a little hump and then long gradual downhill. Left into blackburrow..right into fairfield (99% of us will walk up here)..and then down to the finish its not as bad as I thought it was..and in fact taking out the rest of washington road is actually fantastic Lexx and Tubehunter 2
