Any advice on how early to head for the OMTOM's start?    I see the start time is 06:40.

We stay in Mowbray 6 km's away.   I have no idea of the road closures so I'm not sure how close to the start we can be dropped off, or would it be wiser to go to UCT (I have a parking ticket purchased there) and walk the 2km to the start?  EDIT: I see it seems to be the better option to go to the UCT Parking early and then walk from there.

And most importantly, what time should I leave to make it in time for the start, or what time do I want to be there to enter the starting pens?

It sounds like novice questions, because it is...  :whistling:

I do though seem to have done myself a minor mischief, had my daughters birthday party on Sat at the Acrobranch in Melrose Arch, was buggering around with my youngest jumping off a high'ish platform holding her a couple dozen times and seem to have badly bruised the ball of my foot. It was a little sore at the time, but when I got out of bed yesterday to head off for my weekend run I couldn't even stand on it. I iced it plenty yesterday, and it's feeling a whole lot better already - will go for a little tester run this evening to see how it is - hoping it's just bruising - if it's a stress fracture or something stupid I will really be hating myself.  :cursing:

Thanks,

That is proper bad luck. Hope it is just bruising and you are good to go.

Any Ironman finishers in our midst? How did it go yesterday?

After finishing Irene, I lay in front of the TV and watched it all day.

I have such huge respect for you guys. This is just crazy: (Running a 2:43 marathon after an 180km bike ride (averaging at 41km/h)

1:26 Swim

6:07 Cycle

4:00 Run

Finished 11:52 and was digging deep on the last 10kms to try and keep the pace up.... as I ticked off the kms to go, each one seemed to be longer than the last, but happy with the run and my race :)

having done the logistics a few times.

try and get there at least an hour before time. the 21km traffic is a nightmare and you will get caught up in the ass end.

if you have a ticket, park at the varsity and walk the 2km, it helps with the nerves.

And if you want your family to wait along the route at one point and then meet you at the end again, where would that one point be?

Only an hour?   I would've thought along the lines as per Candz post.

I think he means be there an hour before..not leave your bnb an hour before cos 6km can take an hour!!

For 3 years we have stayed in Sea Point and left at 4am and last year was the first year that we were held up badly by traffic.  I suppose with this new parking system, all roads are now leading to the parking spots whereas before, people where just heading all over...dunno...I missed my batching for my first 21km and started at the very back of the next batch, not fun, so this year we are staying right at the start, and will walk over at about 5.30.

Ok, so rather leave our place at 04:00, give or take an half to a hour for the drive and then from 05:00 to walk the two km's and be there with more than a hour to an hour and a half before the start?

A quick question for the experienced runners here. Think 3 months is enough time to get training in for a half marathon? Not looking to compete, but complete as I am a pretty poor runner and don't have much of a running base. The goal is to complete a Half Ironman distance without any injuries. Can comfortably complete a 5km in 35mins at present.

the problem is you never know what the traffic is going to do on the day. If you are there 1:30 before the start you can always catch a quick snooze (not that I think you will sleep with race day nerves). if there is traffic issues your support crew can park the car and you head for the start.

when my wife ran her first three I jumped on the metro train at newlands/rondebosch station and went to Kalkbay. Once the runners go by it's breakfast at brass bell or one of the many coffee shops in the area, after brekkie back on the train to rondebosch and jump on the shuttle (or walk) to the finish.

the finish area usually has signs erected where you can arrange to meet family. we usually chose the closest one and the athlete goes and sits down there until found, said athlete has a shower we go to the car and back to the B&B.

Plenty of time to get up to HM distance, try to run at least 3 times a week, with a longer slower run at the weekend, this is when you will build endurance and stamina
