The aim, between 1000-1500km millage before comrades.

My aim was also 1500km, but it seems that I will have to cut back. But the difference between 1000 and 1500 is massive. Surely it will have a big impact on race day?

I seriously do not know what wannabee league I am in then...  Jan - May 2017 ended up a total of 835km.   That included a 2/3 week injury layoff.  Our max week was 68km, that included Two oceans ultra.

BTW, that was our first comrades and we started training the morning after comrades 2016.

Be careful to whom you compare yourself to.

I've fallen into this trap before and have only recently caught myself doing it. We all have different goals, very different lives, jobs, circumstances, etc.

I'm holding off Strava because while as motivating as it can be, it (could) also get you into panic about your own training. Just this forum and instagram is enough to make me feel wholly inadequate sometimes.

On a sidenote - I did 200km's less than you.. my wife did half of that and she crossed the finish line with 5 mins to spare looking/feeling like she'd won the whole thing! We're all on our own mission.

Agreed...

Indications are that we will also be doing less than last years 850km, but currently lesser km's, but more quality outings are definitely reaping improvement and rewards and we are staying injury (and itb) free thus far.

Jan 18-134 vs Jan 17-156

Feb 18-123 vs Feb 18-178

So we are already 77kms less than what we were last year at the end of Feb, but we have broken every distances' PR this year and no injury issues.

Glad to hear your ITB is a thing of the past

Running without ITB pain after months of issues is the best feeling ever.

Tell me about it, but i found that i am so super duper caustous now about it that the slightest "Warm" feeling i get in my quads and then my mind immediately thinks its ITB on the comeback and that is holding me back a bit. Anyone else experience this or am i just a big Wuss looking for an excuse not to train?

You can get away with a lighter load, Jess should definitely try get a 140km or even two.

you should consider doing one of those with her.

Peaks definitely mid April and last ultra not after the 5/6 may.

Proper taper only in the last 10-14 days.

That is the dream, but sub 4:40's might be a little beyond me.  Hoping to hook on to Ferret's heels for as long as I can.

Where you hoping to end? With a Bill?

Ja, hoping to dip in under 8 this year, about a 7:55 or so. Thanks for the advice. That sub 7 would be amazing, dude. Given how you cracked that silver last year on a tough race I think it's well within your capability this year. Won't be easy but between your running, cycling and paddling I think you've had plenty of experience with tough.

Haha, speak to Mr Steer. If I recall correctly he had one of the lightest Jan to Jun training loads I've heard of and still completed the Comrades.

Haha... I'm infamous

500kms' training got me an 11:53

620kms last year got me 11:13

40 minute gain per extra 120kms...

So if I do 980kms by some miracle this year I should cruise in easily for a Bill Rowan  :whistling:

I felt mine twitching and tightening a little for months after the worst pain subsided. If you do feel its a little sore after a run ice and rest it immediately.

I know runners that ran Comrades with 300km of training and finished. One of our top runners did 3000km 2 years ago and completely bonked on the day and finished in 11:30.

If you look at the Comrades Marathon Runners Strava group the top 50 people ran more than 110 km last week, with the first guy running 200km. There is no way that with my current work situation (and my current avg speed) I would be able to run 200km in one week. I also don't compare myself with these runners... Yes, I do envy them for being able to run that amount of kms and at that pace.

Do not compare yourself to anyone else. Life happens, injuries happen.

I do agree that your peak month should be the end of March /  April. My longest run will be on the 1st of May, the RAC 60km long run. That will be almost 6 weeks before Comrades.
