Lexx Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 If any of you guys run in these Untitled.jpg Sportsman's Warehouse has then on special for R1800 before Vitality discount etc http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.co.za/product/asics-mens-gel-nimbus-18-road-running-shoes/4498 So how many pairs for running shoes do you go through a year?I will go around 3 pairs
Jackes Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 My problem with doing a marathon before year end is that it means you are forced to train during the horrible gauteng winter months Try Bloem winter months... We did close to all our miles in the winter on the treadmill. Lexx 1
Tubehunter Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 (edited) Found the Strava group! You guys put in some big mileage! Will use that for some kick in the @ss to train more! Got GunRun half coming next month, then focus on running a 5K PB before the end of the year, get my pace up and see how I feel about longer races after that. Not sure of what running aspirations I have for now. (Knees still sore after Sunday...) Edited September 21, 2016 by Tubehunter
Orbit Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Okay so I've committed to the big C for next year, entry will be in after pay day.I've never run a marathon but my half PB is 1:36 and I've been running consistently for a few years. I'm following Lindsey's program for Bill Rowan as I slot in there with all goal times but will set a Comrades goal next year sometime. I now need to plan my qualifier assault. What do you guys think of a marathon end of January and end of Feb? Johnson Crane is in Jan and I'd like to use that as a qualifier and then have Maritzburg Marathon as a backup in case things go wrong. Not worried of quali time, as long as I finish Johnson and then will run Maritzburg as a training run. Are these two too close together? Should I just give PMB a skip if I qualify in Jan? Lexx and Hacc 2
Stretch Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Nah Johnson and pmb not too close. Orbit, Andrew Steer and Lexx 3
Lexx Posted September 21, 2016 Posted September 21, 2016 Is it just me or are running making big comeback. With trail running and Park-runs also in the mix, people are getting back into it.

With trail running and Park-runs also in the mix, people are getting back into it.Back to the simplicity of just throwing on a pair of shoes maybe?I've started running with mates who would never normally run but a 5k is so accessible and a great time to banter and spend time outside. We have seen our clubs race go from 50 5 years ago to over 2000....BUT...a far cry from the 5000+ it attracted back in the 80s and early 90s. Sadly ASA are really hopeless and you see it in schools level athletics where records are all from the 70s, 80s and 90s. BUT - I am really pleased to see the sport growing again...and as you say the simplicity of just popping on shoes and getting a great workout in short time make it attractive Lexx 1

I think though that humans, maybe even South Africans specifically, are a whole lot more health conscious these days. Trail running has made running 'cool' again, Cross-fit and Warrior race have gotten a lot of people off the couch and then there is other things like Banting/Paleo etc that have just made people all that much more about how they treat their bodies. It's great all round... more events, healthier happier people and less reliance on our disastrous government healthcare system Lexx 1
Jackes Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Agreed. I think trail running, parkruns and urban trail runs contributed a lot. Add to that the focus on healthy living of the last few years and this is what is happening. What I like is you don't have to carry a lot of equipment with you where you go. You litterally need a pair of tekkies and you and the whole family can enjoy a run/walk wherever you go. Lexx 1
Hacc Posted September 22, 2016 Posted September 22, 2016 Jonhson Crane is a good qualifier. One of the easier marathons as it is quite flat. Cons are on flats you still work and end of January is HOT. I normally use Johnson Crane as my qualifier, and it has a special place in my hard as it was my first marathon I ran. Mr Winter and Lexx 2

Andrew Steer Posted September 23, 2016 Posted September 23, 2016 My calf troubles are back again... felt a light strain towards the end of my run last week, rested it for a week, been doing lots of stretching, rolling, strengthening work. Hadn't felt it at all since Monday, then Weds I went off for a trot and didn't even make it a km and it was flaring up something special... walked home Kids have murdered my medical savings, so going to hit physio after payday, but it's really becoming a huge frustration. I've really been trying to do the right things this time round but this bloody calf of mine is permanently stuffing me around. Even my placebo compression socks aren't doing the job anymore. Crikey, I've even started doing a bit of Yoga Any thoughts? My physio has always commented on the large amount of scar tissue on my right calf in particular... I've had two bad tears in the past, not quite surgery level, but not far off. I think they called them grade 2 tears. I'm doing pretty much everything I can think of to get around this and move on with my training... has anyone though got any other ideas? I don't care how left field they are SincerelyDesperate. Truly hope something magical happens and you are back to running ways again . Andrew Steer and Lexx 2
