I also find it (prev) useful to dilute water and Coke 50/50 (as it brought the Cho concentration down to ~6%) and to keep my fluid intake < 600 ml / h, i.e. ~150 ml every 15 min's or so.  BUT as I got slower (and more bored!?) near the end of an ultra, I exceeded this by quite a margin in the past, causing the loop of - feeling tired - drink Coke - feeling MORE tired (because of the CHo), drink MORE Coke etc.  I just didn't realise it at that stage.   :(

At the moment I am in an experimental phase re this, but I have not run far enough for proper testing since I started with banting. (Only up to 21's - this will change soon though)

So to be honest I am not yet sure how I will approach a mar+, but we will see.

I don't drink Coke/Energade/Powerade when I train or during the day. I also don't like drinking it on a race as I am sure my body is not used to it. I only drink coke (and then I dilute it with water) the last 10km of a race when I need some energy.

in endurance events I lay off the coke until close to the end as well. Starting on coke too early is a foolish move which I learnt early on....

but damn, at the end a cold coke or cream soda is the best thing on earth.

I mix it up waterpoint to waterpoint at races...

Plain water, then water coke mix, then plain water again... repeating.

The amount of coke in the mix goes up the later into the race I get.

I hit a rehidrate as well as a GU (or two) when going beyond 21km...

I'm a fan more of drinking small amounts regularly - usually around half a water sachet per waterpoint with the rest going on my cap.

Fenix 3 or 735XT.

Awesome deal(56% off) on the 920XT, can't go wrong with this either:

I've bought from these guys before and they're pretty jacked up.

On a side note, I've collected my Soweto Marathon race pack. I tried to arrange the downgrade to 21km, but was told no. The lady did say that I should just drop back and start with the 21km runners, but a marshal could possibly take me off the course if he was vigilant. Any ideas?

Good luck to them trying to pull a 1000 odd runners off the course...

My issue is, not so much that they could pull me off.

I wouldn't mind an official time, although it's not a must but my timing chip is registered for the 42km, would there be an issue with my time showing I've run a 2:10 marathon? How would this bode for my entry into other events if I'm thought to have cheated? Possibly a bit paranoid, but worth asking?

I'm pretty sure you will get disqualified from the results... like many others. The start timing mat alone should do the trick as the races start at different times. If there is no start mat though and no check for the second lap I suspect there will be a lot of guys with 2:40 marathon PB's come Monday

I'm not fussed about time at all, but their "eff you" attitude is strange to say the least.

Maybe just leave the timing chip at home?
