Are bikes kid safe?

So i have a question, that has created much distress at home for myself and the goverment. So daddy (thats me) has a new bike.  And the kids want to follow suit, so i am deciding to get a bike with new brakes etc, which means rotors and the wife whole heartedly say NO  ITS NOT SAFE. Stick to the old ones the V-thingys ones with blocks. and so world war 3 has started  and guess who is in the lounge!! :whistling:

So my question is to riders with kids, what will you do. The kids in question are 11 and 7!!

Sorry, what? Not only are they safer in that they're less likely to fail (the ones that come on kids bikes at least) but they are far less work to pull and keep pulled, saving their hands for actually holding on.

How does your wife say they're not safe?

If the issue is about the brakes, tell her the UCI have started allowing disks in road races, so wella kapella...

If its just about kids on bikes, you shouldnt even need to ask. If you havent bliksemed off a bike as a kid you havent lived!

We all had v-brakes for years! Even the pro's used them in XC riding conditions similar to today's races for years.

Wear the correct gear (helmet, gloves and elbow and knee guards if necessary) and let them ride in bike parks, then Bob's your uncle.

Falling is part of the game.

If you don't get grazes on top of your existing grazes, then you're not doing it right.

But, to your original question - discs are better.  End of story.

My laaitie falls a lot, but very seldom due to the same mistake.

The same applies to us adults. When I started I fell almost on every ride, now, very seldom! (TOUCH WOOD!!)

Just explain the difference between the brakes to her. At first glance disk brakes look dangerous to those who don't know better. She's just being a mom. Chances are your 11 year old gonna be faster than you. So you probably gonna want decent stopping power there. At that age you kind of also want a bike they can grow into. Disk brakes ftw.

On a side note I bearly had functioning brakes on my bmx's as a kid. No helmet either. mmh

Those things just slow you down away!

At ages 7 & 11, your kids should be competent riders and you should have no problems with regular falling. That being said disk brakes can result in some nasty accidents (cuts and burns) but life results in some nasty accidents all the time

Those were the days sigh. I could visit both my girlfriends in one day and still be home in time for mcguyver.

We are currently riding in Sabie. If I could fit disc brakes to my 6yr old sons bike right now it would be done. Hehas battled to slowdown all day! Scared the crap out of his mother on one of the hills!

V-Brakes and 26ers

Contrary to belief they work very well...

Personally I would not let brakes jeopardize my sex life!
