Double crank (38/24) or Triple crank (42/32/24)?

2x10 as you don't lose much in terms of overall ratios, slightly lighter but less shifting up front. Quite like the 2 x 10 setup, I prefer it to my old 3x9, but have no experience on a 1x ride.

In my opinion (I have never ridden 1x 11) I would think the gaps between gears are too big on 1x systems. Would completely screw my cadence. 3x10 is just too much to worry about. 2x10 is the way to go for me.

Having a 1x11 system is pretty much the ultimate set up to have.

And if you run a SRAM crank (just remove the spider) its pretty easy to chop and change with X-SYNC Direct mount chain rings which range from : 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40.

I prefer 2 x 10 with as big a gap as possible between the 2 (42/28). On district roads I can leave it in the big ring most of the time whilst on trails I'm mostly in the small one. Good range of gears and works for me without too much fuss. Can't see myself going to 1 x 11 - or back to 3 x ...

I am no expert. I am a normal rider SAseeding 34 I have had 3 x 10, 2x10 and now 1x10.

My experiance 3x10 is just way too much. 2x10 is a great option and will be enough for any

person and you have enough range for propper climbing and flat speed. I would recommend it for any one.

Now the 1x10. I am running a 30 front with a 11-40 at the back. I did have to train a bit harder because I needed stronger legs on the climbs with the single upfront. I love that you only have on shifter and less complications. Lost a bit of speed on the flats but can still push about 30-35 km/hr if need to so it is fine. I have found that with not being able to push a 38 front and 10 back 2x10 I actually save some energy for the climbs as you don't wast your legs pushing a too high a gear.

The negatives of 1x10 that you will live with. If you do come around a bend and face a steep little climb then you would have to do a propper quick shift to an easy gear or just hope you have enough power in the legs to get you to the top. With a 2x10 you can drop to the small chainring quick and gun it. The jump between gear can sometimes feel that you are missing a gear but with time you will get used to it.

I love my 1x10 setup and will stick with it for now. I will give you feedback after 3towers as to how the 1x10 was with some propper climbing.

Please elaborate! Will this work on the XO1 as well?

1X10 with a 34t chainring and an 11-34 cassette. I get along just fine. I am on a 26er though and I'm not into stage racing. If I were I'd throw money at shimano's new cheap 1X11 setup and consider going down to a 32t chainring. Ditching my front derailiuer made me very happy one less thing to maintain and adjust. I don't think anyone truly needs 3X10 and even 2X10 seems overkill to me. Do the maths and you'll see why. http://www.gear-calculator.com/
