The person who can explain to me (properly) how they determine the Beta value of the ((((Time / Winner) – 1) / Beta) x 100) + Penalty equation get a Bells from me.

If you race well in a long hard race under difficult conditions, you will score better than if you race shorter easier races under good conditions. (If you ride well in the One Tonner on a windy day, you will score better than of you ride well in the West Coast Express on a windless day.) Well, that's my attempt at explaining it, you weren't looking for a mathematical equation, were you? ;)

Thats the theory I know, but in reality, they often give higher beta values for easier races.

Last year they said the Fastone was harder than the Berge en Dale as an example.... If you have ridden it, you know that aint true :)

I have been watching the site over the last few days to see what the Lost City race beta would be, and then my seeding index as a result.

The site was down from last night, and came up again this morning, with the Lost City seeding.

The use of only one event for the seeding does happen when results have been added.  Usually gets corrected/updated in a few days.

Oh, that's a simple one to answer, the Beta value they get from sucking very hard on the right thumb of the chairman (from this year they'll be using the CEOs' thumb to make it more hands on)! That way they know the value will always be right! :D  ;)

Thanks you, the first answer that makes any sort of sense!!

My first seeding was Z, two years ago when I started cycling.  Last year I was seeding in N, and this year in K.  Seems the progress is good.

I see they have added an individual ranking too now so you can see yr ranking within age group, gender and in total. Nice feature that.

I am in the top 10 000 hehehe .... just

Cool.......

Index is now 5.14

Ranked 312 Overall and 83 in 30-39

Not sure that is very accurate though hahaha

Yes the beta is not always applied consistently, but you have to look at the beta AND the adjusted winners time. Sometimes the beta doesn't look quite right for a race but usually  this is offset by a big adjustment in the winners time. So normally the "total" result should be more or less ok.

But even though the seeding system is probably a bit flawed, in the long run if you do enough races you will end up in the right group. If you only do 1 or 2 races a year the chances are that that your seeding is a bit whacked..

My current seeding is way beyond current ability (B group), the nice thing about that is I can pick and choose which group I ride in, this Sunday I will dish out some pain in group F

I understand this all.... If betas are applied correctly, you wouldnt need to adjust any winners times.... Which are often changed again a few weeks later.

I am not maoning about the system, I like it, I think its good, and that its all relative to those around you in anycase, so actually makes little difference. In my case I ride in VA, so my seeding is good enough to ride VA almost always, so I'm not bothered by it.

I want to know, for interest sake. "how do they decide what beta value to give or how much to adjust the winners time by". The thumb suck seems to be the most honest answer posted so far :)

How do you see your ranking?
