I've got a 910XT and a Fenix 2 that I will be selling in the near future (thinking it's Fenix 3 time based on all the hype around them) - unfortunately I have to keep my only HR monitor so you'll have to pick that up separately (there are 2 for sale in the classifieds if I'm not mistaken).

Thanx for all of the suggestions people, much appreciated.

I will be checking out the specs of those watches and scanning the classifieds.

Be sure you know what it can do... Do you run, swim? Cycle? Try?

Do you want to sync to strava?

All of the above ;)

"Budget" is very relative. I bought a secondhand Suunto Ambit 2 (not the sport version) for below 3k here in the classifieds.

It works excellent for running, cycling and swimming (in that order) amongst other sports. You can also wear it as a watch (by doesn't quite have that Fenix appeal). The only downside is data transfer via cablr only...

Oh and this second hand watch still has more than 90% of the battery life.

Budget is indeed relative, I mean for eg R3500 for a fenix 3 is dirt cheap but still expensive if you know what I mean.

910 does not work really well as a watch - even for a few days at a time.

Maybe a Fenix 1 or 2? they are around and relatively inexpensive.

@v12man, What didn't you like about the 910?

About to buy it from Takealot but having issues with their site.

I like it a lot - just it is not really useful as an everyday watch - but as an occasional watch it's at best ok - doesn't even have a watch profile (has swim bike and run stuff that is great) out the box. It is clearly designed to be used as a  multisport device rather than an everyday wear item.

The only other thing I dislike is I havn't found an easy  way to get the .fit files off it in raw format yet - not that I have tried hugely hard..

for me as a "watch" I just need the time and date would be nice, are you saying it doesnt do that in watch mode   as for files, as long as I can upload to strava I'd be happy.

You have to set up screen specific with time of day and date on it - and turn off the gps every time your turn the watch on - like I say - you can make it work - but it's kind of klunky.

I have/had a digital watch with heart rate monitor, whose strap has given up the ghost.

I could replace the strap but thought I would ask what the cheapest watch is that would satisfy these requirements:

  • Tell the time :whistling:  :D
  • Water resistant, not diving or anything, it but normal swimming
  • Heart Rate
  • GPS Tracking
  • Current Speed
  • Distance traveled.

Yes I would like a Garmin Fenix 3 but waaaaaaaay out of my budget.

Thanx

Polar M400\V800 with H7 strap:
  • Tell the time  :whistling:   :D - Check
  • Water resistant, not diving or anything, it but normal swimming - Check
  • Heart Rate - Check
  • GPS Tracking - Check
  • Current Speed - Check
  • Distance traveled. - Check
  • Strava integration - Oct 2015
  • And more...

:whistling:

Turn off the gps every time you need to look at the time, that does sound a bit more than just annoying. Cause obviously your battery life starts to go and then its that you need to worry about, hmmmm???

The 910 is not an every day watch and as V12 said is rather large and clunky which is what you need for multisports and Triathlons.

I would go into a Garmin shop (they may have at Sportsmans) and look at it first before buying online

If you want an everyday watch with added functions I do not think the 910XT is the option, Polar, TomTom or maybe even Timex Ironman Watches http://www.timexshop.co.za/?gclid=CjwKEAjwgqWvBRC2kajZjqeOn0oSJADqBi-lc6shtAs1byLTtyC3_-N0TTm0pIP_jstAnBIIv2w7HxoC-pHw_wcB

You only need to turn it off every time you turn the watch on - you can leave it on to look at the time :) turning it on and off every time - while possible - seems like overkill to me, although it will save battery life.

Sorry for the re enquire guys, but I missed out on the 910XT special.

Today I see the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Watch + Bike Mount +HRM + Cadence/Speed Sensor going for R2499 on TakeAlot - given what I have asked, would you reckon its a good buy?

I have that exact bundle and Im very happy with it. The battery life isnt as good as the high end Garmin and Suunto's but its a fraction of the price and lasts around 7 hours of activity.

I wear it as my everyday watch and charge it around once a month.

The auto upload to Strava etc etc etc is very good and they have all of hte other manufacturers beaten in terms of interfacing with other services.

The Garmin Vivoactive is also pretty great. A friend just picked one up in the duty-free shop at JHB airport for R2500.

So if you have a friend/family member heading overseas soon, that's a solid bet.
