Radios in the lower bunches

I just remember it being mentioned in casual conversation quite some time ago at a local circus TT race Gerald .... how it helped not only younger riders but also new members to understand the dynamics of bunch racing since many either trained on their own or with very small groups.

Even though I have been going to mass events for many many years I do still sometimes find the whole thing intimidating and almost prefer the times when I get caught on my own and just have to slog it to the finish  :whistling:

I think it also helps with safety in the group - we may have wanted to look out for our members in the bunch, but we also had a chat to a few others about overlapping wheels, holding their line (especially when trying to remove/replace a bottle in their cage), and a few other minor bunch riding skills.

R4V. D2D is in 2 weeks. But don't worry with both races in one thread it's confusing.

And the OP was referring to another race, so it's even more confusing.

But as the OP described the events to a tee, it was easy to identify.

I would dig this and have so much fun with it, but there will a few guys warming up on their turbo trainers before the race who will take the radio super seriously, but that will just add to the entertainment.

Or if you do it the proper way they teach ...

Twee drie twee drie dis twee zero berig oor (you'll be so busy there'll be no way you'll be able to ride in a bunch  :w00t: )

From this graphic, and some of the my post-ride data I was in zone 4 and 5. Does anyone know hard it is to talk into a microphone, at the front of the bunch doing 50km/h into a moderately strong wind? I'm surprised the others could hear what I was trying to say.

We used our radios at a race at Stonehaven, many moons ago. I punctured and had to find my own way back to the finish.

Eventually, you're so far off the pace, the regular talk from the backup car is no-more. Then, out of the blue, I hear a voice I know and it's a team mate that got dropped. I was able to ride at a steady pace and to catch up so we could enjoy the last 10Km together.

i was part of the EL bunch yesterday and loved every minute thanks tothe Germiston guys, i learnt loads yesterday. I even joined some of the guys on my ride home and it was awesome to feel part of a "team" and having the support if needed.

I had considered joining the club before as my club is great but more social, and yesterday made my mind up for me and i have asked to join Germiston Wheelers, just waiting for the sign up forms,

They are illegal in all licensed categories.

IIRC, the UCI tried to ban it for 2015, but backtracked after protests. I'm pretty sure i saw a few TdF riders with earpieces this year.

So under whose rule are they illegal as per what you said earlier considering the UCI about-turn.

Lol. Sorry I'm the one causing the confusion. I originaly posted that I suspected it was Germiston yesterday (not many clubs that had trains in the EL group) but I got R4V and D2D mix up, and then took it down anyway, but chain of confusion was already set off....

ProTour is a different story all together.

Locally, race radios are banned.

He he - no problem.

Thought I'd add the extra comment to make it sound even more confusing.
