To go 1 x10 or not to go 1 x 10

Completely agree, removing just the 15t leaves a big jump between the 13 & 17t. we are currently working on a redesign of our old 40 & 42t extenders with a 16t insert.

These will be both Shimano and SRAM compatible.

Havnig these on a 1x 10 setup makes a world of difference and assists with those nasty hills that come by surprise

I know this is not what you guys want to hear but in my, albeit limited, experience getting the shifting right with these mixed together cassettes is a bind ....

I would really like to be shown in practice that it can be done and not in some ideal situation with brand new everything and specific setups but keeping in mind many are trying to do this with limited budgets and trying to re-use as much as they can ....

My best setup is maar still with a NW chainring, normal 11-36 cassette and clutch RD. never gives me any grief besides my legs perhaps. Again despite all the heroes around I find that in specific situations it isn't enough (case in point sharp short ups where you have no run up)

I don't understand the 1x11 trend.  The weight doesn't make that big a difference.  When I was mtb-ing I had three chain rings.

Its not about weight. Its about less stuff to go wrong, more ground clearance (this is a biggie) and a space for a dropper post lever (game changer).

More ground clearance? how, did you shorten the crank arms?

No - when you have the cranks level. More ground clearance cos instead of having a 38 / 42 / 36 you now have a 30/32/34.

Small difference, but it's a difference. Technical climbs can get technical, and if you're going slowly, or over a new obstacle it can be a problem.

Hi Guys

I know that there have been a few topics similar to this one but i want to know from riders who have made the change or who have thought about it and decided not to.

I ride a 2016 Giant Anthem X 29er with an xt/slx 3 x 10 drivetrain. 11-34 casette with 24/34/42 up front.

I ride mainly giba, cascades, karkloof, holla, and district roads/single track in and around Hillcrest. I am relatively fit but no racing snake. I ride 3 times a week, 40kms during the week and about 40-50kms on the weekend. All my races are 40kms plus and i do push myself while obviously enjoying the ride more than anything else.I never use the big chain ring and love the cleaner look of the 1 x 10/11 setup. However i do need that granny gear!

Many of my fitter mates have done away with their 3 x 10 setups and gone straight to 1 x 10 or 1 x 11. There are a few options:

  • going 1 x 11 with the new xt casette, derailleur, narrow wide chainring ( wouldn't know how big, maybe 30t ) chain and shifter, i would keep my current crankset - expensive option
  • going 1 x 10 with a narrow wide chainring ring, keeping everything except for cassette as you cant add a 42 expander sproket ro an 11-34 cassette- at least that's what i have been told...
  • going 2 x 10 and just getting a new crankset and derailluer.

My main concern is losing that easy gear for those tough hills and maybe the range of gears i may have at my disposal during a ride?

Would appreciate some tips, tricks and any advice on this topic.

Thanks

I went from 3X10 to 2x10 twelve months ago and very happy with it. Next step is 1X11 only when my current set up is "klaar". Enjoy

Ok, makes more sense now. thanks

I wholeheartedly recommend 1x10. Local suppliers like Kalbo (seach this forum or the web) will sell you a 32/34 NW chainring, a 40/42 granny & a 16 intermediate as a kit for a lot less than you would think.

I converted my 2x10 29er to 32 & 42 and ride Giba/ Karkloof, etc & I am not fit by any means at the moment. Would never go back to 2x or 3x, I have progressive simple shifting, clean bars/ dropper post lever space, less FD clutter, etc.

That's so much info and who says you cant ride in CPT with a 1x10 (normal 11-36 cassette)?

Which trails? I have ridden up Helderberg and Welvanpas (all the way) with that and a 34 at the front (27.5") and I am not light, nor strong and wasnt fit either.

I considered going to a 42t at the back, but opted rather to train more and get fit (maybe like you mention because of cost). This weekend I got a QOM on a mother of a long climb with my AM bike and that ratio (where XC bikes usually ride).

Never say never.

I am on a 29er and going straight up Jonkershoek and the steep fire trails in Grabouw. Not the usual climbing paths and jeep track but the steeper straight up sections - that you would typically ride with a small upfront chain ring on a 3X10.

But if you going up all of it, including to the tokai mast with a 34 on the front and 32 on the back and you unfit and chubby, I take my hat off to you mate.

Now you know.

1x is great for majority of people on short distances. The longer the ride becomes the more you will suffer.

If you don't use your big blade. I would say 2x.

good point. I'm thinking of going back to 2x for W2W and definitely for next year's Epic.
