I might be completely wrong, but was the research done on cyclists at all? I only read marathonners.

Is it as applicable to guys that are only doing cycling?

Most of the research is on runners. The mechanism remains the same however:

Endurance exercise exerts a chronic volume overload (leading to predominantly eccentric chamber hypertrophy) while strength training exerts a pressure overload (leading to predominantly concentric chamber hypertrophy).

Case in point ...

basically: 50g/day of bacon raises your risk of bowel cancer from ≈0.064% to ≈0.072%. Any reports saying "bad as smoking" are irresponsible

So should I smoke or eat bacon, you guys tell me please?

Eat bacon.

Always eat bacon.

I'm going take the high risk road and look for smoked bacon pieces next time i go shopping

Would be interesting to determine the relationship with exercise blood pressure and BP responses at a specific workload and risk, rather than intensity of maximum capacity (iow stress and strain on cardiovascular system as whole unit).

Won't low intensity training but at an increased BP and subsequent elevated HR have the same effect?

As JarradVZ points out it appears that it is really only in susceptible individuals. The problem is to try and identify them before it is too late.

You obviously aren't a racer.

Well ... If you do he's not in front of you no more. Just a thought. :whistling: :whistling:

You right, I'm too old to worry about being a racer and considering the topic of this thread ... suppose that's a good thing ... trying to stay alive longer?

Going into the dreaded downhill slide 50 + in a couple months time...with my eyesight already shot...being told i need to get a quack to stick something up my rear end every now and again...thank goodness i havent been a marathon runner...more like the couch whale...so my heart should be strong as i venture into cycling [emoji3]post-70852-1446005038,6116.jpg

Facinating topic this. At 52, I now have my excuse for those lazy days!!

I know the feeling.....

But in hindsight i think is an excellent topic. simply reality check as you get older you have to engage the brain more and think about looking after yourself better...

I see lots and lots of old "retired" people around me here in switz who are still very active and much healthier looking than their average South African counterpart, the reason being imho is they are very active...not hard core vet racing active but just active in a lot of ways including walking / hiking up mountains etc... its a way of life
