Riding on painkillers a bad idea?

I cracked a couple of ribs two weeks ago when I came off my MTB.

With 947 around the corner, I am keen not to lose too much fitness so have started riding with the help of a fairly strong painkiller (Tramacet) as from a week ago Ie one week aver doing them in).

Have however noticed that my heart rate is materially higher than normal (average of ~10 pbm over ride) even though I ride slower than normal.

Am now starting to wonder whether pushing through the pain is such a good idea.

Keen to hear views /  experience of others.

Thanks, as far as I have been able to establish Tramacet contains tramadol but do not think it's a NSAID which are milder, over the counter, drugs right?

Although Tramacet is not a 'classic' nsaid like Voltaren, it is still a bad idea. Side effects like dizziness can cause a few more broken ribs.

And since tramadol is a distant cousin of morphine, chances are good of it being on the WADA ban list.

Go ask your doc if there's something that you could use. You never know, there may be something that's safe. And drink lots of water.

Tramacet is an S5 painkiller. Works like a charm, but I doubt it'll mix well with cycling. Best heal up nicely before hitting the roads again. Else you may hit the road again...

Good luck

I am also on Tramacet (and Cataflam). I hope to go for a gentle ride on Wednesday (if my shoulder allow). Actually have a DH and enduro event on this weekend, but got a feeling I am going to have to sit out if I want to be pain free at 94.7  -_-

Mild Tramacet is not... - main problem is when riding under the influence of pain killers you can hurt yourself worse as well as have other metabolic side effects - rather ride at an intensity that your pain allows you to without taking pain meds - just keep it calm enough to not be in pain and in general you will be ok.
