I have to agree with Myles, an Icon is not a front tyre... it is strictly a rear tyre.

To the OP - describe what type of riding you enjoy and the conditions that you encounter. It will help people give you focussed advice.

I run an Ardent and love it...

I have Hans Dampf 2.3 on the front and they fantastic.

probably higher rolling resistance compared to some but if you not racing, these are the puppies nuts.

Can anyone tell me the price of the Spez ground Control 2.3 roughly?

Approx ZAR500.

.

Despite what the spez haters say, spez make some good (but not the best) tyres at some of the lowest prices.

.

Very good price : performance ratio

[NB: don't buy the s-works tyres; only the "control" or "grid"]

Chris:

I have a Maxxis Ardent 2.25 front and Maxxis Ikon 2.1 at the back. I am on a hard-tail and no trailblazer but I have improved my confidence on the corners with this set-up. I do more XC than XCO or Enduro.

I was lucky to get tyres on special at Hotspot Cycles earlier in the year for less than R500 per tyre. Check their website they might still have them on special.

Cheers

thank you for all your input, its been a great help!

I do like a tire with a low rolling resistance but just want something with a bit more side grip and mainly when leaning the bike in the corners is where im looking for that extra grip.

I dont do too much technical riding and not that much rough stuff to be honest, mainly local trial riding with quite a bit of hard pack and not riding very hard either (only recently started riding this year) but as I progress I am looking for more grip as my speed and confidence is growing quite a bit these days and have had the front wash out once or twice with my current tires. I have no other issues really when it comes to grip and tires other than my cornering and don't enjoy the feeling of my current tires under cornering and leaning the bike.

I am riding a hardtail and XC, definitely not a trailblazer (for now)

I agree with all the ardent fans. I have the 2.25 ust up front with an Ikon at the back and this has solved all my "lack of front end grip" problems.

Just make sure to run the ardent at a low enough pressure. Too high and it has much less grip but get it low enough and it is the business. I am 110kgs on a good day and even still I run it at 1.5 bars. Those sidewalls are made from the woven hides of cockroaches - guaranteed to survive a nuclear explosion.

Spez Butcher or Purgatory - make sure its a Grid. Won't go wrong with either tyre. Pricing is also pretty reasonable.

I use Rocket Ron 2.25, they are great when new. They get a bit washy when they wear out.

Something I noticed that since getting a dropper seat post, the front tire seems easier to control on corners.

Horses for courses and to each his own.

While personally I don't ride clown wheels I do like my front rubber to give linear grip feedback so that I know how much more it'll take. At the back I like it fast and playful. So iKon(front)/RacingRalph(rear) for smoother faster trails/races and LUST Monorail (not available in clown shoe sizes)/Crossmark(rear) for rockier terrain and training. Provided it's dry of course.
