Ugh pinot noir, no body, horrible taste. My ideal red is inky, dark, with strong wood and smoky flavours, it must stain my mouth and teeth and almost look like port.

Koon, as we refer to it, is a Penfolds wine (cheapest of all the Penfolds) and it is really good, esp at the price. Haven't bothered going more expensive on the Penfolds range (which ramps up steeply from the Koon, next up is a Bin 413 I think, at around $43) because I am cheap and it is not...

Better and better!

Next time you're feeling flush, look for Mollydooker which is a Barossa red. Is $40 odd, but flpn awesome...

Yesterday's plus...

Te Mata Peak, Havelock North.

Well worth a visit.

K4kked myself on a single track on the way down - the exposure is unreal. Got off and walked more than once.

Bike wash facilities at the gate (no, I didn't use them...)

Potential minus - Craggy Ridge wine estate at the bottom of that valley has a $110 steak. (No I didn't try it...)cb792079b56fbab4556838bba664cf2a.jpg1898eacf4c578b8717ca09b957a01e77.jpg

Couple more negatives:

School is cheap. Uniforms are sensible.

Booze is a shocker. R400 for a bottle of Gordon's gin, a beer out is going to cost R100+ for sure. Quaffable wine about R140 a bottle, you can get cheaper. Really good wine probably R400.

Kid friendly restaurants are not a thing here.

Left my phone in a public restroom on the beach, used 'find me' to locate it, went to the house it was at and they said yep, we've got it, didn't want to leave it there in case it got stolen, just reported it found to the local police station.

More often than not don't lock the door, and although probably not wise, have woken to find the tv still there.

Probably worst thing is property price. Sold 4 bed/3000 sqm in Benoni for R2.5M, that would make a deposit here, just, had the house been paid off.

Pretty much all of the edited list above applies in Brisbane. Wife lost her phone at the beach, it was found and they let us know by phoning the most popular outgoing number (and luckily that was me).

Wife leaves garage door open quite often, and I am more scared of the spiders and snakes coming in than of stuff being taken. Door is also occasionally unlocked, and once or twice left wide open. No self respecting burglar here would steal a 55" TV though, the health and safety aspects of heavy lifting would shut them down. They would only take stuff that fits in their pockets !

I have read similar from the forums i am on. Not sure how true. That being said it does differ from company to company but pretty scary all the same.

Definitely differs company to company. The wife works for Amazon and has been on maternity leave for the past 4 months fully paid and going back to a promotion next month.

That said most US company policies re maternity leave and general crabs in a bucket mentality in the workplace is shocking.

On that note, I am a bit garrulous (and typing badly) right now as I am lashing into an arvo Koon session. Here's the label for easy identification:

Hahah this reminds me of the night I spent by you... How many bottles did we finish hahaha

What are the price of toys like in NZ ... when I say toys I am clearly referring to mountain bikes :)

Seems the same everywhere. My friend just bought a 2019 Trek Fuel EX 7, for R22500 if that helps.

I live in Dubai, UAE. Bikes are sooooo expensive here!! Between 25%-35% more than South Africa in general. Doesn't help that they only stock the latest and greatest and never have "last years" model at reasonable prices. Strangely components, parts & kit are ok in price when comparing but once again you can't find affordable range brands. It's all Assos or Rapha or ....

The bad...

Stravassholes don't only exist on the Spruit.

Was riding Woodhill on the weekend and on the last 150m stretch, heading back to the car park, some riders came flying past a youngster (approx 14yrs old) and shouted "ON YOUR RIGHT!". In the flurry, the youngster pulled right by mistake. The stravasshole proceeded to shout and swear at the youngster, because he had to slow down and veer around the stationary rider.

I'm not sure how bad his chamois rash was or if he was just about to break a world record (racing 150m to the parking lot), but there was no reason for him to carry on like a child having a tantrum, let alone at a young rider who made a simple mistake.

So yeah... the majority of Kiwis are friendly, but still some knobs on the island.
