Heavy Cyclists

I take my hat off to all you "heavy" people who still go out and ride. I'm supposed to be naturally thin, been quite skinny my whole life, where the lightest I weighed was around 68kg's (that was in 2012). Got a bit lazy with riding and got a bit naughty with my eating habits, and in no time, I was around 80kg's. In 2 years I weighed just over 105kg's, had to lower the bike's seat to get on the bike, lost interest in riding, and became a couch potato. The odd ride that I did do, I hated because I just wasn't enjoying my time on the bike because of the weight I had put on. 86kg's now, would ideally like to lose another 5kg's, but I'm enjoying myself on the bike a lot more now than I was a few months ago.

My lightie is one of these buffaloes, he doesn't battle on the climbs as his BMI is 23. I think that is the issue a lot of big guys have, it is easier to maintain a lower BMI if you are shorter.

One thing about these big lighties, he is a destroyer of bike equipment. On the MTB he can pretty much break any component if he rides normally.

I am doing Sani2C with him next year, I am looking forward to the district road stretches, if I can keep up and he doesn't destroy his bike.

BMI gets worse if you are shorter, its a height vs weight calculation so the taller you are the heavier you can be.

That is if you place any value in BMI, it is an old and very one sided calculation.

jip, know all about this, i am 1.98 meters tall and around the 96 kg mark. I hear often how awesome my slipstream is. And having a size 61 bike isnt always easy either.

I once dated a chick who worked as a nurse for Momentum. When we had a chat about my weight, she said at around 105kg's, I was bordering on obese. I'm around 179cm, so I think whoever did your assessment at Momentum was a bit off  :whistling:

You should have seen the size of the nurse...she would be in the buffarilla category :nuke:

Hope it wasn't your date

Nah, wasn't my date. Although maybe that's why she didn't want a third date.

Edit: Have a woman now who, when we met, wanted a third and fourth and fifth date even before I lost the weight, and she's pretty skraal herself, and I'm as happy as a pig in poo.

So its always interesting to hear how many "heavies"  are out there.

Because I reckon the Cyling Buffaloes outnumber the weight weenies in every way , even in the amount of people cycling.

The only place we dont do well is on the podium and at the top of the climb.

True story: When I was ordering my Cyclelab jersey and I asked for XXL (up from an XL) and I made a comment about not too many people that size on a bike they told that that 60% of their jersey ordered and short orders are in the XL to XXXL categories. So we had a quick chat about it. Now I know cycling clothes generally run small, but the average South African male is not going to do well in the medium sized shirt. Just saying.

How about a hub handicap formula based on age and weight - not sure who has the brains to do the maths behind it.

Entry BMI needs to be over 30.

I urge all you "bigger" guys to give track a go.  You might be pleasantly surprised.

Contemplating this, but its a schlep from the southern suburbs to the northern suburbs.

Guys, BMI is such a bad measure because it does not take into account fat vs muscle.

If you are serious about improving your shape, get a skin fold calliper so you can estimate your % fat.

BMI is a terrible index at individual level.

having said that, I just worked out mine: "Your standard BMI is 29.93" SO SCREW YOUR COMPETITION.

(29.08 under new formula)
