Ancestral claim - state that your ancestors had been jumping their donkeys, horses and Pennyfarthings on that land many, many years ago and as such, the land belongs to you now.

It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.....

I found that out the hard way. I went the correct route and asked for permission to build on council land. That was 5 years ago. Still no jumps...

Just make sure if you go the stealth build route that the jumps are well out of prying eyesight and there are no neurotic aunties living in the general vicinity. Some people hate fun and especially seeing others having fun and it's zero fun seeing your many days of hard labour being flattened by a bulldozer in seconds. Seen it happen before, was sad.

Contact the local councilor if it's on state land.

The Black Hill stuff was built with full consent of the council - it's nice to build and ride where you know that you are allowed to be.  I've done it the sketchy way in the past, and you're always looking over your shoulder.  Not fun.

It's also a hell of a lot of effort, so make sure that you're prepared and have the cash for it too.  If you start and then give up with only one or two things built then it turns into an eyesore and future possible locations / landowners may be put off by it.  Do it properly or don't do it at all.

be very careful when building jumps on council land, use dirt not concrete etc, the council tends to leave dirt alone but destroys anything else. as stated above and also be aware of liability as if someone cases the jump and breaks their neck etc you could be held liable.

To get permission to build my trails and jump line I had to speak to a DA council member. Dont even try municipality coz they just want money. if the land is owned by state speak to a DA council member about starting a ''childrens youth track'' We also put up signs saying ride at own risk for the liability..

Till somebody hurts themselves on "your" jumps and you have a lawsuit against you.

It needs to be legitimate with proper indemnity signs otherwise you are just looking for trouble.

I retract my earlier irresponsible statement about asking for forgiveness instead of permission.

Do the right thing. Speak to the right people and get permission first. Make sure you comply with all the legalities as well as all the health and safety and environmental issues that need to be adhered too. It will save you a lot of hassle in the future.

Good luck with your project.

And remember to stock up on whiskey, cos you're going to need it when it comes to getting buy-in from the neighbouring aunties and uncles. If they require it...

anyone know some good locations in the Constantia area?

There's already quite a few jump lines in constantia area... Soetvlei (Justin Novella's line) then the well hidden jumps in Rhodes drive (better have permission to ride there - HECTICALLY "local only") and then Chris Nixon's place of course.

Not much open space that would be away from prying eyes and on council / state land.
