So this is why we ride tubeless...

I only recently converted to tubeless, and when changing a tyre today, I found this thorn on the inside of my tyre! The tyre held its air 100%, so the sealant did its trick perfectly.

But what do I do now when I replace the tyre?

a) Leave it as is

b) remove thorn

c) remove thorn and plug

Any advice?

Thanks!

Cut it off / shorter but DO NOT REMOVE from tyre.

The only issue is that you cannot stick a tube in that tyre anymore.

I ride with the Botswana guys and they simply leave all the thorns in the tyre.

If you now ride on tar, the thorn may pull out and you'll get a free pearl necklace  :whistling:

plug or bike patch from inside

I have gone the patch from the inside route. I however did not use a normal bike patch, I got a "mushroom" patch from SupaQuick, cost me about R5.00 if memory serves.

Here's what it looks like: post-19039-0-57233000-1449824788_thumb.jpg

I cleaned the tyre are properly, sanded it lightly to ensure even adhesion, glue the crap out of it (including the hole in the tyre), left to dry a bit as per usual patch and stuck the mushroom through and on. After about 15 mins I just cut the excess piece sticking out the tyre flush, left for a day. Added sealant and it worked a charm! Tyre was at about 70% lifespan left when I patched it and I had rode it until about 10% tread left with no issues before I replaced the tyre.

If you are putting on a new tire - why worry - unless you are planning on re-using the old one....

Then pull all the thorns, and plug the big holes if they leak sealant - otherwise if they don't leak just leave them.

Had a couple of customers from Botswana when I was at Yellow Saddle - Inside of the tire looked like a hedgehog! They never cut or removed the thorns.

Did Cycle Mashatu some years back. Every day your tyres would be full of duiweltjies. Left them like that and lost 0.1 bar of pressure in four days of riding.

This is a small thorn, pull it out and plug it. I always pull the thorns if I see them, as I may need to put a tube during a race and don't want to have the thorns there if I can see them.

Jip,

I agree with all of you. Pull it out. It is better to fix and if necessary battle at home than in the bush, where you will be holding up your buddies or messing up a great ride.

Have a lekker week end

I also had a similar experience earlier this week. Got a flat not far from home which sealant wouldn't plug. Walked back home, where I topped up my sealant, and continued to pull about 10 thorns out my rear wheel only. Inflated, spun the wheel a few times and voila! No wonder my bike felt heavy, it's because of all the wood in my tyres..
