Was hard but def a tad easier than elites, there is not so much constant attacking

Nice meeting you too

We tried to catch the breakaway, at one point worked so hard I almost dropped but recovered quickly and went at it again. enjoyed my first VA race, but our teamwork needs some work. But we will get there

Good to meet you as well. All I need to do now is meet your team mate patch.

Gosh there was no wind yesterday, I was burying myself on the front of VAs yesterday trying to find the gutter and it didn't exist.

Also tooooooo flat.  Gutters only work if there is a bit of a suffer zone.

Bring on Berge & Dale

So I mailed Fast One Race organisers, CSA, PPA and the marketing manager from Value Logistics (for good measure:

Hello

I am not sure who to direct this email to. CSA don’t even answer their phones when I called now?

I participated in the Value Logistics The Fast One on Sunday, January 31 in Gauteng. There were several crashes in the different bunches, caused by riders who were cycling illegally in the right hand side lane, pulling back into the main bunch on the left hand side of the road every time a car approached.

I moved to Johannesburg from Cape Town last year, and at every road race  handled by the PPA, they would have someone on a loud speaker telling every start group that it is illegal to ride over the white line, and that you would be disqualified. It was annoying, and by the time your group was ready to  go, you’d heard it all a couple of times. But it certainly drove the message home.

I have never heard this being told to any riders at any Gauteng road event, certainly not at the Fast One. Besides crashes in  the actual bunch, riding into oncoming traffic is dangerous.

I am sure we will see the same thing at Ride for Sight later this month. Who is meant to control this reckless behaviour?

Regards

Lauren

And here is a response:

Dear Lauren,

Thank you for your mail and for participating in the race sponsored by us.

The Value Logistics Fast One is sponsored by us as it is a major fund raising event for Rotary International who does amazing work with the money raised from the race within disadvantaged communities. This however is no excuse for poor safety .

From my dealings with the organisers of the race I know that Safety is a priority and I have personally attended numerous meetings around safety that are held in the planning and lead up to the race. Your comments and feedback are valued and I will discuss your mail with the organising committee and ensure that your suggestions are implemented.

Our involvement is limited to The Fast One so I am unable to comment on the other events mentioned. In conjunction with Rotary International we want to host a race that cyclist like to ride in and come back to year after year. I will ensure that your mail reaches the race organisers.

Kind regards

Now you will see exactly how dangerous it will become when riders want to move to the front and the only way they can do so is by forcing their way through the riders in front of them. You will have riders pushing each other out the way, bumping of handle bars wheels overlapping.....in the end you will see even more crashes.

I'm all for keeping left of the white line but with such large batches staying together till the end it will be impossible to expect everyone to ride left of the line at all times. I keep left and pass as quickly as possible on the right when it's safe for me to do so and that makes it safe for the riders around me.

Even our bike marshal was seen right of the line on numerous occasions   :whistling:

So who enforces keeping left of the white line in the land of the Disa?

How do they enforce it?

How do numbers at the races compare to GP?

I'm asking because I've only done 2 WP events and they both had full road closure.

We as adults can take responsibility for our own actions too. I know this concept is very strange in the "it's everybody's but my fault" country that we live in.

We can, should and actually do successfully self regulate in the bunches as an addition to marshals.

I completely agree with you. I have been involved in a crash from guys pushing and nudging their way through the middle of the group whilst not taking the proper care to do so.

The roads were way too narrow on Sunday for everyone to fit into the left hand side and there weren't any big climbs to separate groups to make them a smaller.

I reckon marshals should ride behind the main groups and keep watch of any cyclists who do cross over to the right hand side of the road and disqualify any rider who is found either riding too long on this side or cutting back into the main group dangerously if an oncoming car is approaching.

Riders pushing up through the middle of the peloton (between two riders) forcing other riders towards the outside and often over the white line is far more dangerous in my opinion.

That's not a Fast One thing, that's a knobhead thing.

The more you stay and move as a unit, the faster you will go.... But there is always a few. Back in the day natural selection would have rid us of these maniacs, but hey... it's now "cool" to go against the grain. Oh well.

Let me go and cut a hole in my Prevail for my topknot.
