several whattsapp groups to keep the change of scenery and riding partners interesting :whistling:  this requires 3 x different alarm settings : 04h15, 04h45 & 05h00 and this includes WINTER

It's a little trickier getting away with falling asleep in the lounge by 20h30 and the rest of the house is still buzzing

preparation preparation preparation

always have someone that is also up & out

put back with the family at home, what you put in with the mates out on the bike "coffee & breakfast"

Saturday i was awake at 5:30 and riding with the club at 6:30. Tried the same on Sunday with just the GF. We climbed back into bed. Like most have said, the key is motivation, for me its disappointing someone else when i don't rock up that keeps me waking up early.

I don't know whether getting up at 3:00 shows dedication or insanity...either way, respect!

I'll try the 4:45 start again tomorrow.

Up at 5am or 5:30am, depended on my planned ride before work (everyday regardless of weather).  Weekends try to get out as early as possible, usually up at 5am.

Mostly ride alone...

What I find works well is getting everything ready the night before, and when your alarms goes of you must move, and do not think about it, go through a set routine and get on your bike without looking outside.

The moment you out and about, you usually appreciate the quietness with nature or also love Cape Town CBD when it is still sleeping.

Once your routine is set, it becomes easier.

Thanks to that strava review, my wife worked out I spent more alone time with my one riding buddy than with her last year :P

I get up 45 minutes before each ride starts, which is a 10 minute ride away, so it means:

04:15 for weekdays and Saturday (early bird)

05:30 for normal Saturday club ride (if I choose to skip the early bird)

Sunday is an hour before as it's about 20-25 minutes away.

Getting back from ANY ride is better than rolling over and going back to sleep. I feel more refreshed after a ride than I do getting the extra hour or two. If I don't want to ride, I don't set the alarm for the early morning.

Not a morning person...try ride in the afternoon...but in summer it sucks because you are hot and sweaty from the day and here in durbs by the sea the humidity is not pleasant.

because of the heat...been riding at 5 - 5.30 am...i get up half an hour before the time and make sure everything is ready the night before...some crazy people ride at 4 - 4.30 am...my body is still sleeping even if my eyes are open if i get up that early.

Did she do this calculation to try and work out why she's been so much happier over the past year??

how long do you guys normally ride for?

I leave for work between 5:30 and 5:45 so it's a bit tricky, but if some of you are getting up at 3am, I've got no excuse :whistling:

Saturday's I'm up at 4:30 to start sun rise-ish.. obviously changes in winter

I am fortunate in that I work from home on Thursdays. On Mondays and Wednesdays I do cadence close to the office, so I beat the traffic on those days. On Tuesdays and Fridays I get to work early, and these are generally my rest days as well. I usually leave the office at around 3pm on a Friday, so there is time for a quick ride then if I am so inclined.

I'm hoping that it's going to be a lot easier to hit the sack early from now on, to allow an early morning spin. I NEED sleep. Not a morning person at all, but as long as I get a minimum 7 hours in I'm generally fine. Unfortunately, with my wife working 2 jobs up until December last year (2015 - day job then photography business) she's been awake to 11pm most nights, which means I am as well. Which also means that I only surface at 6am earliest.

So - I'm also going to give the go to bed early thing a try. See how it goes. Hopefully it's the start of something new.

Luckily I have a training partner - helps to keep each other motivated!

Up at 03:30 - out the door at 4am!!

Normally feel awesome after a ride along some of the most spectacular coastline in South Africa (I'm in PE), except this morning I felt like I was hit by a train after doing hill climb intervals up 14% gradient climbs prepping for The Herald cycle tour!!

Woken the cashiers at the entrance to Suncoast Casino many early mornings. You feel like a jerk if you knock on the cubicle window only to get a free entry into the Casino. (Perk from Suncoast if you arrive with a bike before 8 am any day of the week). With the Hilux safely parked, a 04h15 roll out can commence. Alone, been let down too many times by previous crowd. Back at 06h10, off to VA Mount Edgecombe for a shower. Work starts at 07h00 and is 500m from the gym.  Spinning or Intervals at the Gym in the afternoon, if I feel like it.

Thats my problem too. I leave for work at 5:35 and get to an unfamiliar town at 6, where there are no showers, making an early morning cycle from work impractical.

Anyways, posting this here in case someone offers you a solution
