Strava + HRM

Morning fellow hubbers,

Looking for your advice & experiences with Strava & compatible heart rate monitors.

I am currently using Strava for my rides (am testing out the premium 30 day trial) and it works well for recording my rides, have my phone mounted on both my road & mountain bikes.

I also have my Suunto watch mounted on my bike as well (T series).

However, I was looking into it, and in order to record gym activities (spinning classes etc) I am presuming that I would need a compatible device, i.e. HRM, so was looking into it & came across this one for R1799

Not sure if this is the only one, or has anyone else got any other suggestions.

I am not sure if it is worth it or not, since I am already using my Suunto, which is not compatible with Strave.

Also, is the premium Strava version really worth it, over the free version...your thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that all Suunto watches should be compatible with Strava. You can create a link so that as soon as you upload your workouts to Movescount they will be synced to Strava.

If memory serves me correct, it will only sync activities that have a GPS route, so spinning would be excluded. The link below should answer your question in detail.

I use my garmin to record my rides and then load it onto strava as I find certain flaws using strava only. Iam sure suunto has the same setup.

Any bluetooth HRM should do the trick, and if your phone supports ANT+ then those too.

The same one is available here:

I have the less expensive one, and it works fine with my phone and Bryton:

Tacx also has one (https://www.buycycle.co.za/technology/heartrate-monitors/tacx-smart-heart-rate-belt/), and I'm sure other sites have other options.

(all Buycycle links because I'm too lazy to check the other sites)

Thanks for the replies so far...

My Suunto is not a GPS capable device, (T3d) , but I do have a bike pod on the bike that allows for me to track a ride if I start it on the watch itself. So with this I can record the ride & upload it to the Suunto site via moves count.

However, what I don't really like about it, it that it does not auto pause, so if I am riding on the weekend, and stop at a traffic light for a few minutes & that is done many times on a 4 hour ride the watch carries on running & this adds to the ride time although you are stationery.

Strava is not a fan of anything that doesnt have a .gpx file.

What you can do though is use your Suunto(assuming it does HR) and then upload the files manually to strava. You can export it from movescount, easy peasy.

I do that with my ambit3 for indoor spinning to record HR.

Hello Oobafunky,

I would definitely recommend the Wahoo Fitness TICKR or TICKR X. THe main reason here is because the TICKR has what it calls Dual Band Technology. It is the only belt that connects via both Bluetooth and ANT+, this means you can connect to multiple devices simultaneously i.e your Suunto and Smartphone.

The belts are also software upgradeable which is a great feature. This means that when they release an improved algorithm or more recently Apple Watch integration the belt can simply be upgraded via the Wahoo App. This makes the belt kinda future proof. All their products, RPM sensors included has these features.

Two thumbs up from me...

I use a Polar H7 (BTLE) connected to phone. Works with any phone based app then, including Strava. R1k from Sportsmans, or if you're on Vitality, get a nice 25% discount.

Also, I'd say strava premium version is worth it. It's not ridiculously expensive, but I'm someone who likes numbers and stats.

I use the Wahoo TickR belt with my phone and Strava, works well, but Strava do not work unless you move.

I use Strava outside and then Wattbike in the gym. I upload the Wattbike to strava, then it is fine.

Unless you really going to be seriously training the Free Strava should be fine.

The biggest thing is that you do not see your suffer score.

Most guys have covered the HRM piece and between the Wahoo TickR belt and the Polar H7 belt you'll have your best options!

As for Free versus Premium Strava, you need to be honest with yourself what your goals are and how you intend using the software. If you're simply using it as a logging tool and wanting to get the Vitality points with Discovery then the free option covers all those needs. If however you're in a serious training block and want to crunch over some extra data, set some specific goals and have this all in one place then the premium option will work better and validate the extra spend!
