XTR vs Eggbeater 3

I have been riding Shimano's for a while and loved them recently got a bike with eggbeaters so decided to try them out. I got really bad cramps in my feet which I have never experienced before, could have been bike setup but I believe the support on the Shimano's is better. That being said after some time riding the egg beaters I have grown used to them.

I just don't get crank brothers, or at least the fact the people still buy their stuff. They have had so many reliability issues with almost all of their products. Admittedly they have made a few decent pedals in the past; The Mallet and the eggbeater are both reasonably popular. But even then it's a case of "Yeah my CB pedals are great, I have to rebuild them now and then but it's easy". It's the packaging isn't it? It sort of looks like you'd find an iphone in that sexy CB pedal box. To get a feel for what the some of the cycling community thinks about them, read the comments, it's hilarious:

By comparison, I have had a pair of shimano spds for over 6 years. I'm not proud of this but....I've never actively washed, oiled or maintained them in any way. They have done over 10,000km. They still work perfectly. It's just not an issue.

My point is, its not even a choice. Shimano.

mmmmm neither...

I have seen both versions spectacularly fail on trails without warning. Go XT and save yourself some cash and a lot of frustration, actually scrap that, go 540's and save yourself even more moola.. Crapbrothers is the alfa of the mtb world, beautiful but maintenance whores.

I only buy entry level pedals for mtb, regardless of bike spec. The pedals take a beating, and mud will eventually get to the bearings.

I had Crank Bros 'beaters, loved the 4 sided engagement, but needs a service once per year or so.

Now on Looks, very very impressed after 2 years worth of hammering.

Yes I do... ;)

I currently have XT, have had them for 3 years, not serviced once, scratched to hell, crashed and still going strong....they will stay on my multiday dual sus, but these are for a new weight weenie HT.

I think I read somewhere about some concerns about XTR durability?

XTRs from around 2012 had a fault where the right pedal could come loose from the spindle or axle.  Shimano swapped them out no questions asked.  I don't think the problem still exists.

XTR and Dura Ace also have a longer warranty than Shimano's "lower" ranges, so it's not just about weight.

Consider the candy's rather than the egg beater. The weight is only a fraction more and the platform makes the pedal considerably better. Even Burry used them  ;)

I hate SPD's with a passion, i think they are terrible and heavy.

Definitely consider the looks. I have just got a set to try (about 4 months now) and so far I think they are a good mix of the "pro's" of shimano and the candys. If the durability is good, I will probably stick with them going forward.

Rode Crank Brothers for many years and rebuilt them once every six months and a new pair once a year due to them bending and breaking on rocks or just general wear and tear. Broke a few of the egg beater "blades as the hit rocks and snap.

I have now had a pair of XT's for 3 years and never been rebuilt and just keep running 100%. Great pedals...

My only gripe with the shimano pedals is the float and the fact they hold ALOT of mud when the trail is wet.

i have XTRs that are almost 20 years old. they've outlasted a few bikes, many shoes and several sets of cleats. rebuild? what's that?   :w00t:

I also thought XTR pedals were basically indestructible. However, my recent experiences with pedals slipping off axles, bearings falling apoart, etc. has put me firmly back on XT's.

I would love to upgrade, but when I google XTR pedals, I still find too many unhappy reviewers complaining about exactly the same issues.

The big issue with the Crank Brothers for me is that if the spring snaps you lose the entire pedal, not like you can use the other side. It happened to me but luckily I was 2km from home and not 70km.

I've ridden both extensively. Not a fan of the squishy feeling when clipping in of the eggbeaters but they are quite reliable. I dented mine on a rock and had to replace them though. Also tried the Candy's but they were terrible, but they were the Candy 2s, so not sure how good they get higher up. Been riding XTRs for the last year and haven't looked back since.

I love my Eggbeaters, have had them in some form on all my bikes, including my road bike, since 2008

One failed bearing on a spindle in all that time. No bent or broken blades or springs - maybe I just avoid riding the technical stuff due to a skills shortage!

Don't go to any particular trouble looking after them either. Clean after ride, copper compound once every 6 months and service once a year.

Interesting to see the Look STracks (cheapest ones) are lighter than XTR's. XTR's being 307g and the Looks 284g (without the cleats). Just throwing it out there ...

Been smashing my Looks for 2 years, they look like crap but the still work 100%.

And a site for weight weenies ...

I just got S-Tracks with the clip on thingy. Gives great surface contact. But they are new so the jury still out...

I went Look because I swear by them on my road bike and have basically since clipless pedals were invented!

That my friend is more than 95% (yes I just made that up but I'm sure the majority) even bother with including myself .....Give them a cursory brush when I do clean my bike and that's for sure not after EVERY ride and never bother to service them unless there's a problem which hasn't happened yet (SPD's)

I had a pair of 540's for years (about 6000km) no problems at all. I tried the Candy's on a new bike build and just did not like that "Squishy" feeling, esp. if you have to quickly hook it up a sharp incline. A few times when I've "pulled" hard a cleat came right off the pedal.....Im now back to 540's and love the solid feel to the cleat.
