Cheabb78 Posted February 7, 2016 Share RIP. Are cyclists allowed on the M4 Freeway? There's a lot of cyclists on the M4 every weekend, so yes. The stretch they were on has a wide yellow lane, so we can only speculate at this time as to what happened. Have also seen this link, look at the state of the car, must have been flying!!! So sad and unnecessary! http://northglennews.co.za/75137/two-cyclists-killed-on-m4/ geoff.rich
Lance Roberts Posted February 7, 2016 Share A friend of mine was out for a ride when he saw it. A eye witness told him that the car lost control. The news report says they were in a group of 40 riders. Just so sad to think of everyone involved and the riders families... A sad day for riding. Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of the two that lost their lives doing what they loved. Chro Mo Posted February 7, 2016 Share There are many accidents at that spot - even though it is dead straight. Never understood it.
wiledog_x Posted February 7, 2016 Share Unconfirmed reports of drunk driver overtaking in the emergency lane. Gut wrenching.if that turns out to be true, the driver should be charged with murder, not culpable homicide...RIP cyclists.... pe3nguin Posted February 7, 2016 Share if that turns out to be true, the driver should be charged with murder, not culpable homicide...RIP cyclists.... Well I can't attest to the drunk driving claim, but I just took a ride out to the scene and can confirm it looks as if the driver was heading North in the emergency lane. Cyclists often use this road due to the wide shoulder. Edited February 7, 2016 by pe3nguin
Sepia Posted February 7, 2016 Share RIP fellow cyclists. That section of road on the M4 is EXTREMELY dangerous. I do not understand why cyclist use this stretch of road. There are many safer sections and routes to ride. M4 Durban to Umhlanga should be banned. Many people are full of ink early in the morning having spent the night at Suncoast. Don't ride there guys, please? Edited February 7, 2016 by Sepia seven, Oufy MTB (Roadie), partydave and 3 others

Interesting article here http://roadsafety.co.za/2011-08/are-cyclists-allowed-to-ride-on-a-freeway-or-national-road/ about the legalities. The M4 Ruth First is marked as such freeway at Argyle Road where it begins in the South. Having said that there are safe cycling passing signs over the Umgeni River! Either way it's a tragedy on the M4 again... seven
