Shimano/Sram Inter-compatable?

Hi

Can one have a mixed (Shimano and Sram) drivetrain?. E.g. Sram cassette with a Shimano chain with Sram chain ring? The speed will obviously be of the same kind.

So basically, is the same technology but different manufacturers? Are they inter-compatible?

For those in the know, would a sram 42-10 (11psd) cassette work with a shimano 11 spd long cage mech?

To add to this question. What about using an XT 42-11 cassette with a SRAM 11 speed derailleur and shifter? If possible, this could really cut down the costs of replacing a cassette. Obviously you'll need to have a Shimano freehub body fitted.

I have a mixed Shimano/SRAM 2x11 setup. SRAM GX shifters and rear mech, shimano xt 8000 11-40 cassette and shimano 11 speed chain, SRAM 1250 crankset (24-38t), SRAM front mech. Works well, even though SRAM do not recommend GX 2x11 on full suspension bike.

It will work

Yes, but it's the expensive way of doing it - SRAM cassettes are more expensive and they need an XD driver body.

SRAM RD and shifter and Shimano cassette is how it's usually done.

I once put a sram cassette on my shimano road bike and the gears slipped terribly on the cassette, swapped to a shimano cassette and all was sorted.

I have been running a Sram cassette on my Shimano drivetrain for years without a problem.

only place it wil start to effect the drive train negatively is with Xt/Xo and up on the lower spec parts you won't notice any difference nor any negative effects on the drive train.

Can't comment on road parts.

cheers , happy riding

Works perfectly. That's what I'm running, with an ultegra chain

So how does the lower spec parts work any different to the higher end ones? The only differences between high and low is cost and the material they use,the mechanics are the same.

When it comes to the cassette and chainrings, they don't (except the very low end jobs ie below acera)

The pickup points are the same. Profiles the same. Spacing the same. Only thing that's different is the material and machining, to reduce weight.

When it comes to the derailleurs, shifters and brakes it's a different story. Bearings vs bushings, replaceable vs pressfit pivot bolts and higher spec springs, metal vs plastic in the inner workings (sometimes) as well as weight savings on certain non critical areas and then of course lower tolerances. Which means a higher input cost due to more accurate machining practices.

But cassettes and rings? Nah. Go for deore or pc1150 etc. No difference in performance between that and xt etc.

Hi all.

Thanks for the input... good advice.

Im rebuilding an old school 26" hardtail and I want to go from a 3x 9spd to a 1x 9spd, so basically just removing the smallest and largest chainrings.

From my experience the Shimano chains are very durable but I also prefer the Sram casettes, and from a cost point of view the Shimano chain rings are the best value. So thats why I want to mix them up... glad to know I can.
