Cape Epic Gear Ratios

I love the 1x with the second chainring, stop-move-chain-by-hand plan. Next big thing will be if they invented a mechanism to move the chain from one chainring to the next ;)

I suppose the fact that gearing is becoming a recurring theme means that 1x is not enough gearing ratio for most people.

I suppose it might look something like this

I did my first Epic on a 3 x 10, 22/32/42. Worked perfectly for me, as there were some loooong kays. This one is all about climbing, so hence why I want to switch from 26/36 to 24.. Still got to see if this combo will work on XT..

I really don't understand why people would ride a single front ring on a marathon stage race?!

My only guess is that it is a dick measuring contest. The bigger your chainring the better, and jaro doing epic with a 36 is the Ron jeremy.

I've just gone through a lot of run around moving my 26/39 to a 22/34, because I want my legs to survive.

Just for a bit of perspective....

Most probably more folks have finished the Epic with a 3x9 than with any other gearing...

and on top of that it was on 26'' bikes.....

And 2x9 26ers with 44x29 chain rings and 11-32 cassettes some even with 12-32 or 12-34 and even hard tails, aluminum hard tails......

Everyone is so fixated on complexity these days. The more complex their bike, the more they have to talk about I suppose

How does that make you feel?

Its best of both. I like it. prefer heavier gears on the flats so fits me, and the climbing gears are there aswell.

1x11 just doesnt make sense to me.... Top end wise

KALBO Elliptical Z-RINGS  are specifically designed to even out the power transfer from the pedal cranks to the rear wheel by increasing the effective chainring radius through the power sector of the pedal stroke and reducing the effective chainring radius through the weak sector of the stroke. As a simplified example if you are running a 34t elliptical it will feel like a 36t at the power point of the stroke and like a 32t at the weak point of the stroke. The end result is a more effecient moevement that provides better traction especially for technical climbing.

Our elliptical Z-Rings have all the tried and tested unique KALBO features from our Round Z-Rings that make them stand out from the rest including Z-Pattern alternating Narrow/Wide teeth and miximised tooth height  for greatest chain retention not to mention Class III hard anodising that gives it the distinctive silvery gold colour so you know it has the hardest wearing coating possible for maximum life.

Its bassically what im running.

32 Oval is like 30 on climbing, 34 on flats/downhills

Read it. Not weeping. They are not saying the same thing...

No where does it say it feels like a 32 on the climbs and a 36 on the flats. It says it provides better traction for climbing. That's it.

That is what is being implied. Any "reasonable" consumer like me and the OP will read ./ understand it like it is written.

Expert bicycle mechanics like you on the other hand......  :whistling:

OK, I'm bowing out of this one. No need arguing over it, I have better things to do, like washing my hair.

No matter what happens the ring has to turn all the way round, so at some point in every pedal rotation you are going to be feeling like its a bigger ring, so at best it may be tough in a certain part of the rotation and easier in another part.

I think in the old days the theory behind elliptical chain rings is that you pedalled faster through the dead spot. Spent more time in the pedal stroke where the torque is maxed.

As for the 32 / 36 story, I have read the marketing stuff which does suggest it is the best of both, without making an unambiguous claim, I am not buying it. The only recommendation I can give is that you may feel like you are getting slightly more torque down when climbing a steep hill. Otherwise it doesn't make any difference. It certainly won't make your 34 feel like a 32 on the climbs. If it did, my 36 at the back would feel like a 38, and it doesn't.

Haha - the Merino Monster was looooong, right?

I was not happy with myself.........my mission was to get to the top without stopping or walking....i came close in the first two kays......then it does get slightly better. But its a hard climb.
