I am a bit confused because I contacted Wahoo the other day and asked them about the Elemnt and pre loaded routes. They said that the functionality is not on the unit yet. Perhaps as the article says the difference is down to the tester having a beta test unit. The Wahoo unit would suit me perfectly as I get a 50% discount through work on their products.

Your GPS is pretty much just a backup, so you don't need much more than bread crumb navigation. Not saying it's not worth it buying a nice expensive Garmin, but if you're only buying it for navigation at Sani, it's not.

The major turns were still marked last year, and there's always someone to follow. Your GPS just needs to shout at you when you go wrong, which all bread crumb navigators do.

The Garmin 520, 810 and 1000 are all very nice products.

Garmin is your best option when it comes to GPS.

You know that you want one and the Sani is a good way to tell you other half that you need it because the rules state that!

Also, if you do get lost you only have yourself to blame. If you did not have the GPS and you where following someone, then you cannot blame anyone but yourself at the end of the day.

R6.5k reasonable?

The Elemnt does look very interesting. Seems they are doing a good job of making it play nicely with pretty much everything they can find.

Been testing the unit the past month, very well made product.

Early stage for most of the functionality, but with updates every two weeks it is definitely a product worth looking at.

No need for a GPS i would just like to say you would need to recharge the garmin unit and recharging is quite hectic if you dont have acess to a power pack . I used a polar RCX3 with a GPS linked unit which lasted 3 days without being recharged .

Navigation is really not needed for the Sani there are so many riders to follow .

I bought a Garmin Edge 810 for JHB2C and did Sani with it as well. It works as advertised without missing a beat.

From what I've heard from riding mates, the Edge 520 is perfect for the job as well.

I had a Garmion Fenix (1 - the original) and couldn't see reason to upgrade before last year's Joberg2C. I used an old Suunto bike mount and it worked perfectly. My riding partner used the Fenix2, with an old Polar mount. Between the 2 units one was zoomed in and one was zoomed out. The screen is small, but we never had issues. Bonus is that when you're viewing another screen, the watch's seconds indicator is used to show the direction that you should go.

On Joberg2C there are fewer people around to follow and maybe the route is less well marked - so if it' worked for JoBerg2C, it would work for Sani2C.

If you're into multisport or even just hikes in mountains, then maybe consider non-cycling-specific units like the Fenix too.

Fenix 2 is still available and way cheaper than Fenix3.

Edge25, costs half of the other units, and does the same. It also is small enough that it doe snot look like you are riding with an Ipad on your handlebars.

Tested routing ont he edge during last week, and it really is easy as pie to follow the track. even gives off course warning and indication if you stray more than 5m off the route.

Can't find whether this topic has been covered already, although I am sure it has.

I am doing Sani this year for the first time and I see that I need a GPS unit. Looking at whats available, I presume that the choice is pretty much between the Garmin 810 and the 520. Any thoughts on the best unit for this?

Many thanks in advance

If you don't see yourself using a gps otherwise, follow the person in front, or the tyre tracks.

I am going garmin fenix 3 wearable

Will obv mount it for the race to the bike but can't see myself buying a 6k device to use exclusively on my bike

So spend a bit more and get an all round useful toy that links to discovery for other activity as well

I do agree to a certain extend.

There is however something special about having a bigger (square) screen and various screen options specific to cycling that make a head unit amazing.

From a totally personally point of view I don't find the watch that stylish. I prefer my normal wristwatch :)

Bigger i can understand, but square?? As for the cycling specific, you can modify your screen to show just what you want (i do not know what data field is cycling specific that you cant find on F3 :whistling: )

What he said is, if you are just cycling buy a device for cycling, but if you are doing anything else you might as well invest in something that can do the "anything else" as well.

i've used a edge 510 and a F3 during sani and had no issues with either.  i like doing a bit more than just cycling so bought the f3 and has since sold all my other devices as i found i wasnt using them anymore.

Edit:

to stay on topic, you do not need a gps to complete the sani.  If you choose not to take one you should just make sure ride with someone thats got one, even if they are slower that you.  95% of the time the turns is easy to see, but you just cant complain afterwards if you got a bit lost during the other 5%.  if you plan on using a gps device in the future, you might as well buy one

Bought the Edge 520. On sale at CRC for 199. Used it a couple of times and it seems the business.
