try this test. After 1 ride with fresh lube , wipe the chain between ur fingers(to get lube on your thumb and forefinger ) and then rub your fingers together , I bet you will feel a whole lot of grit . That's eating at your parts. I wash and re lube after every ride and I use that over priced hydro dynamic team sky lube crap at R350 for 50mls . But it's great lube

Lube as often as you like if you wash the chain beforehand. I've seen drivetrains with enough wax on them to seize them up completely.

Very strange that a lot of people wipe the lube off after applying.

Squirt dry wax (haven't checked the others yet) mentions "do not wipe off".

 

For the record, I use baby wipes after every ride to clean whatever is on the chain after each ride. I only apply lube once I've washed the chain, which could be once a week or up to 2 weeks depending on the weather. (Road bike only).

Lube often as you like but remember to clean chain just as often.

Lubing a dirty chain will help but also only so much, it still creates a grit paste eventually and this causes wear and tear.

I am nowhere as, dare I say it, 'anal' as most seem to be about washing and bike care in general it would seem ????

 

I want to ride my bike not spend most of the time treating it better than my wife! It's a mountain bike not a track bike ????

 

Am I the only one?

Wash and lube after every ride!

I have not yet spend a lot of money on replacing parts as yet!

It helps to look after your stuff!

 

Most guys spend more money on their bikes than what they spend on their wifes! So OCD is not a bad thing!

* There is such a thing as washing your bike to much ( a little'stof' is no need to wash this is washing away grease and nothing else)

Where do you still get Motorex aerosol wet lube? Cant find anywhere and it was surely the best.

 

Currently using Motorex wet and dry lube (No not together...) Wet if the conditions are wet and dry if they are dry (The wet lube tin is a LOT fuller than the dry lube tin :ph34r: ). Chain gets a squirt before every ride.

 

Before that I used Squirt. No issues there either. Same routine. Used to carry it with me on wet races though and lube at the water tables.

No that's me too. What's the point of washing an MTB? Rather go riding and make it dirty again.

 

I just do the minimum to keep the mechanicals happy. Get rid of the mud/dust off the chain and gears and spd pedals. Clean and lube the shock stations. Occasionally some lube on the chain and a few drops of oil on the spd's and the dérailleurs.

 

As for chains, it is worth noting that motor cycle chains can last up to 30000km. BUT they have O rings which seal the gaps between the links. This is where the wear takes place that causes the chain to "stretch" which in turn trashes the sprockets. The wear between the chain rollers and the sprockets is secondary.

 

So if you are going to soak your chain, scrub it with degreaser or polish it every week with a chain cleaning device, you need to make a plan to get lubrication back in between the links. In the factory they do this by dipping the chain in a tank of lubricant dissolved in solvent. Then they let the solvent dry and the lube stays in between the links. Alternately they can soak it in a tank of heated molten grease. Then they let the chain cool and the hardened grease is left between the links.

 

If you have not got the time, motivation and means of replacing the lube between the links, best not to clean it out in the first place. But a nice layer of waxy/greasy lube on the chain will help slow down the ingress of dirt into the gaps between the links.
